The THIRD ACT is a New Mexico film, written and directed by longtime theater creative mastermind Doug Montoya, owner of the BOX Performance Space and Cardboard Playhouse Theatre Company. The New Mexico cast will learn from a Hollywood legend who’s worked for TEN Academy Award winning directors.
After being given news of their pending eviction, a lovable and talented theater company plots a heist to pay their rent while filming at a local bank.
Most exciting, we are producing this film with a budget of less than $100,000! All donations and investment into the film are tax deductible because of the fiscal sponsorship from the nonprofit New Mexico Spotlight Foundation.
Once completed, THIRD ACT will be a model for mentoring actors and building further success in New Mexico produced films. Share that love with #LoveThirdAct
Plot Summary
Before everyone else arrives, Abby, the stage manager of the Theatre Company, carefully and lovingly cleans and prepares her theater for its opening night performance. Floors are swept. Toilets are cleaned. Lights are adjusted. Abby takes money from her own wallet and places it in the cash box.
Opening night is a critical and creative success but only a few tickets are sold.
After their performance, the company members of the theatre, including actors, writers, and creative crew, gather at their favorite local dive bar. Adam, the artistic director of the theatre company, delivers the news that an eviction notice has been served to the theater from their sympathetic landlord, who understands their plight but must recover their months of unpaid rent.
Creative and unrealistic options for making enough money to save their theatre are thrown around. Abby quietly and confidently suggests a plan that she’s been cooking up all along, requiring this band of misfits to shoot a film for the local 48 Hour Film Project in her uncle’s bank.
Can this theatre company resort to committing a crime in order to save their theater? Are there other characters at play?
You never know who you’re stealing from.
