The Project
Tied to the Sea explores our human impact on marine ecosystems. Through a blend of science and personal narratives, the film will educate audiences around the world on the effects of plastics, POPs (persistent organic pollutants), preservatives and chemical compounds on the health of the ocean. Equipped with this knowledge, we will motivate our viewers to put pressure on governments and industry leaders to prioritize ocean protection. Beyond education, we want to inspire a collective reconnection to the ocean, our source of life. When we feel connected, we care. When we care, we take action. And action can't be put off any longer.

Tied to the Sea is a Call to Action
A call to those curious souls who hope for a better future, and are searching to educate themselves on just how to make that future happen. In our search for answers to our own questions, we realized just how out of touch with the issue we were and that we definitely weren't the only ones. Tied to the Sea is made by young people, for young people, and will be used as a tool to unite, mobilize and fight for change.
Who We Are
This project has been a labour of love for the past year, coming to you from a team of five women (plus our fabulous music composer, Dane) from around the world. We have filmed in 9 countries across 4 continents, speaking to scientists, activists and every-day people who care about the future of our planet. This is a globally created film about a global problem. Coming from backgrounds in education, journalism, film, activism and design, we have collectively created a unique platform in order to educate and call our generation to action.

Your Investment
Making a film is expensive. We have poured our hearts, souls and savings accounts into this film and we stand by these personal investments. We have now reached the extent of our personal resources and so we turn to you, our community, to help with the following expenses. There are some great perks on the right of this page in it for you!

Artist Fees: $4500
We are fortunate enough to have incredible artists working with us for a fraction of their going rates. All of our graphics and music are original, and our editor works magic to put it all together. These three brilliant humans all believe in the message of this film, and we believe in the effectiveness of their work to deliver that message. Plus, artists need to eat too. The directors will not be paid or make any profit off the film.
Coworking Expenses: $2100
We have been lucky enough to connect with some great coworking communities in different parts of the world. These hubs of activity have not only given us a dedicated workspace where we can congregate, but have introduced us to many of the faces you'll be seeing in the film.
Equipment & Storage: $1745
Oh, equipment. Everything from camera and monitor rentals to stock footage purchases and online storage. We have been working with the bare minimum (did we mention we started this film without a camera?), but everything adds up.
Festival Submissions/Marketing & Educational Materials: $1380
We want this film to be seen, discussed and act as a catalyst for change. This means submitting it to film festivals, being present at the festivals, getting the word out in print and online, and getting into schools.
Campaign Expenses: $550
You have to spend money to make money. Who knew?! Indiegogo charges a fee for the use of their platform, which is included in our final amount.
Travel Expenses: $400
What?! How did we travel through 9 countries across 4 continents for this film on only $400?! Well, as we said, we covered the majority of costs out of pocket and this is the last bit we need to get us to the finish line.
Total Expenses: $10,675
Any unused funds will be split between two wonderful non-profit organizations working tirelessly towards greater environmental protection and the mobilization of young people: The Indigenous Environmental Network and Trash Hero.
*Please note - in order to receive one of our awesome perks, you must claim it on the right hand side of the page!

We are so intrinsically connected to the ocean. We are because it is, and without it we can't live. When we destroy it, we destroy ourselves. When we protect it, we protect ourselves. It's time for us to take collective action.
We are all Tied to the Sea.
