Overview
Hello my name is Dereck Seltzer. I am the Fiance and creative partner to the Artist and Musician, Tina St. Claire who passed away March 9th, 2016 after a short battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), a lethal form of brain cancer. She was 31 years old. I am working with KNR Productions and Film Director Rich Ragsdale currently to produce a documentary on Tina's life and art because I believe her story may provide insight, hope and inspiration to others in need.

Hello, my name is Dereck Seltzer and I the fiance and creative partner of the Los Angeles based Artist and Musician, Tina St. Claire (a.k.a. Tfail) who passed away March 9th, 2016 after a short battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), a lethal type of brain cancer at the age of 31.

I am working with KNR Productions and Film Director Rich Ragsdale currently to produce a documentary on Tina's life and art that will help continue her story and also raise awareness of GBM.

I am asking for donations for this project in order to complete the film in a way that Tina herself would be proud of. The goal is to stay true to her unique aesthetic and vision without having to compromise or sacrifice the quality of the documentary due to budget constraints.

What we need and what you get

  • I am looking to raise 60k to fund the documentary in full. The creative team behind the project is going to use animation, interviews with her friends and peers, archival footage, original art and her music to present a story that provides a intimate look at the person behind the art and music.
  • This is a ambitious project and in order to do it right we need to pay for things such as renting sound equipment and camera gear for interviews, paying for crew members to help assist with filming, archiving footage, editing and most importantly to animate her artwork in a style that fits her unique visual iconography and voice.
  • All donations will receive a digital download of the film when it is completed. There are further incentives for donating, and these items being offered are unique, limited and some are one of a kind. Limited enamel pins, T-shirts, signed silkscreen prints and original artwork by Tina St. Claire such as her final paintings on Canvas will be given to those who donate. This helps further Tina's legacy by proliferating her art and helps you directly introduce her work to a new audience through your peers.
  • 60k is our goal, but should we fall short of that we will use any and all funds made to continue with this project.  It is our main priority with this film to not have Tina's passing be seen as simply a tragedy or the end of her story, but that instead that her life, love and art be a platform to help others in need.

The Impact

  • Tina created all of her artwork while she had early stages of GBM, which had been put into remission by her immune system. That means that her entire visual catalog of well over 200 completed pieces is the work of a young woman living with a terminal form of cancer, creating images of her story that convey strength, courage and triumph in the face of impossible odds. I believe the example she set forward could change the way that we as a culture view terminal illness and also provide imagery that younger people who are facing similar challenges can relate to on a level that is perhaps more relatable and inspiring then the images we associate with cancer currently.

  • Tina's work was to her a way to offer something back to those she never met, but still wanted to inspire. If she could do it, so could you. That was her belief, that by offering the best she could to any given situation, she could inspire others to do the same. It is my hope that this film will further share that message, empowering others to remain strong in the face of trying times and uncertainty.

Risks & Challenges

  • I understand that making a documentary is a huge undertaking and also that I alone cannot give a complete narrative for who Tina St. Claire was. This is why we need funding so that we can interview friends, family, former band mates, peers and those in the international art scene who knew her work to fill in and complete Tina's story.
  • Additionally, because Tina passed at the age of 31, actual footage of her working is limited to what she left us with. This is why we want to focus on animation using her art to provide content and images that further our ability to tell her story. Animation is expensive, time consuming and requires a skilled and dedicated team who care for the work they are doing and that provides our biggest hurdle creatively.
  • In order to work past the challenges I have spent the year putting together any footage I could find of Tina, scanning and archiving high resolution images of her art, speaking with her friends and peers to coordinate interviews and piecing together the narrative for the film. The pieces are all coming together and with Director Rich Ragsdale and KNR Productions agreeing to work on the film, we have a very capable team who care deeply for the project and who knew Tina personally ready to continue moving forward once we have the additional funding to help.
