My name is Ruby Lee Thigpen Whitehurst and I live in eastern North Carolina. My film Two Nations began as a three page short story for an English class assignment, when I attended college. My classmates and professor loved the story so they suggested that I turn it into a novel. Thereafter, I turned the story into my book titled, Loves' Soft Voice; and therefore, that is the book that inspired Two Nations.
Two Nations is a unique, historical, story based on
family legend. It is the first film to show the friendship and courtship
between slaves and Native Americans. These types of relationships happened
often especially in the southeast United States of America. Yet society and
history does not talk about such relationships.
SYNOPSIS BEGINS:
Inside a beautiful log
cabin, surrounded by fragrant, hardwood trees, foliage, and fresh air Bright
Star Whitehorse shares with graduate student, Alan Johnson; The amazing legacy
of Waterfall Lake. He learns of her ancestors, Yellow Wolf; the son of a great
First Nation Leader and Zerondi, the daughter of an African King and Queen.
Bright Star takes him on a
journey that tells of a time - when snatched from the Motherland as a victim of
the Triangular Slave Trade - Princess Zerondi arrives on the southern shores of
America. As soon as the ship docks, the captain does not waste any time sending
her straight to the auction block where an Englishman named Lord Welch
purchases her.
Meanwhile, deep within the forest, a young warrior named Yellow Wolf is on his way to his first vision quest. He travels for three days
and when the sun is midway the sky, he notices a flock of vultures
circling over a vast field of wildflowers. The alert young man whispers,
“Perhaps Brother Bobcat has killed more than he can eat!” Yet, instinct tells him
that something extraordinary lay ahead. Therefore, he immediately heads out to
investigate. His senses tell him that someone needs his help and his senses are
correct. He moves ahead with caution and comes upon a young woman. Although
she is near death, and he is aware of her slave status, he stays with her. The
young warrior nurses her back to health. Once she is strong enough to travel,
he takes her back to his village. Will they overcome language barriers and
racism?
