UNCSA's Preparatory Dance Program

  • My name is Matthew Donnell. I am the Director of the Preparatory Dance Program of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Together with my wonderful team of seasoned performers and teachers, Alana Niehoff and Jan Adams, we lead the young students of UNCSA.

  • For 40 years, the Preparatory Dance Program has provided pure, classical dance education to elementary through middle school students through world-class conservatory training in our state of the art facility. Our students have gone on to become excellent artists and citizens.

  • WE ARE A NONPROFIT PROGRAM, AND CURRENTLY RECEIVE NO FUNDING FROM THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA.
In order to continue the growth of the Prep Program, we need donations. Today's dancers need to be more versatile than ever before. In order to ensure this, we need to offer wider variety of dance styles, expand our faculty, offer more performance opportunities, and most importantly increase our base for financial aid and merit scholarships.
  • Your tax deductible donation will directly help us to be able to relaunch the Prep Program making it possible for us maintain operations and expand our community outreach into areas who have never been exposed to dance. Funds can help put dance attire on a child in need and ensure that no one who auditions ever be turned away due to lack of funds. There is no limit to how far your donation can go!

We need you! The world needs dance! Fun Perks!

  • $10,000 will help begin our relaunch. Funds will go toward aiding operations such as increased performance outreach opportunities, the Dayna Fox Scholarship Fund, and ensuring our ability to continue to provide top-notch instructors and exposure to our students.

  • If 1,000 people donate $10, we'll meet our goal! But, if you're feeling REALLY generous......

  • PARTNERSHIPS
  • $100-$249: Corps De Ballet: Your name in our end of year workshop program

The Impact You Help Make In The Lives of Our Students and Families:

  • Our mission is to develop the entire person by developing the entire artist. Your donation helps us enable children to grow into well educated artists, future supporters of the arts, and most importantly, model citizens.
  • It has been proven that dance education builds character, intelligence, and camaraderie. There is a stigma that dance is an elitist art form, and we want to tear down that wall.

Risks & Challenges

  • Preservation
The Preparatory Program has always been seen as a place where people who would otherwise not be able to afford training can find sanctuary. Without the generosity of donors such as yourself, we cannot continue to offer assistance. Thereby, we run the risk of not discovering talented, intelligent, and driven young students.
  • Quality/Safety
There is a lot of training today that isn't safe for young dancers. Our world is marketed for instant gratification, and many times, dancers are not properly prepared to safely execute the movements they are being asked to do. Injuries occur more often when a student isn't properly prepared.
  • Integrity
Students/Parents need a safe place to be educated. Many schools allow their students to wear inappropriate and suggestive costuming and dance to inappropriate choreography. This hurts the dance world as well as the maturing student.

Please help us get the word out!!!
