In this single player narrative-driven adventure game, you take on the role of an adorable, curious Golem that explores a vibrant and lively world. This experience is entirely non-violent and contains no text or dialogs, offering a wholesome and relaxing story together with the Golem in this magical place.

 

Unpetrified is a 3D narrative puzzle exploration game. You play as a Golem brought to life by a magical butterfly that embodies the energy of Nature. When you awaken, you set out to explore the new world that is offered to you.

 

As you travel, events will take the Golem through a wide range of emotions, affecting the world and animals around you. Puzzles add rhythm to the journey, bringing new information about the past of this world and its inhabitants.

The progress made by the player is visible through the flowers growing on the Golem's back. They are witnesses to the events that the Golem has bravely faced.

Our initial funding goal has been reached on Kickstarter, but the journey does not end there! There is a lot more to unlock, including the much anticipated Nintendo Switch version.

 

A long time ago, an ancient civilization harnessed the magical energy of this world to build, thrive, and create living stone creatures, the Golems. They had developed an entire system based on the creation of these Golems that could live off these sources of energy and do the work that no one wanted to be bothered with. In pursuit of power, they abused the magical energy which ultimately led to their downfall.

The game takes place long after the ancient civilization, where the magical energy reclaims the world by giving life back to the Golems. Born from the union of the world's magical energy and the ancient civilization's engineering, you take control of one of these hybrid stone creatures.

 

One of the unique features of Unpetrified is the importance of the protagonists' emotions, which immediately affect the weather, plants and animals around it. This strong connection is the result of the bond between the Golem and the energy that flows within it. Accompany the Golem on its journey to find the meaning of existence and a place where it belongs.

The magic aura changes color according to emotions

 

On your journey you get to travel through a whole variety of landscapes, which all contain their own unique flora and fauna. They blend seamlessly from one to another, letting you traverse freely.

Each region uses a specific color palette, allowing for a great diversity in landscapes and atmospheres. Within those main regions are sub-regions, such as the birch forest and the mushroom cave, both included in the forest biome.

In each of these biomes, you'll be able to enjoy a whole array of indigenous plants. Specially designed and modelled by our team, most of them are interactable and hold an exclusive reaction depending on the current emotion. Thanks to the magical energy held within the Golem, some areas that had been struggling for many years are now awakening again and regaining their former vitality.

The same goes for animals: a large variety can be found in each region and will surprise you with adorable reactions when you get to meet them! Some might even need your help and doing so will give you unique rewards and help you progress in the world and story.

Desert & Oasis animals

 

Reflecting these lands' tragic past, you will find ruins along the way, reminders of what once was. Engraved runes tell the story of this ancient civilization, allowing you to learn more about what happened as you get closer to the heart of the shattered capital.

 

The world as it used to be before the downfall

 

One of the most important parts for us is to have very vibrant and immersive visuals, something that puts a smile on your face.

Our process starts with 2D concepts of all the animals, plants and buildings, following the guidelines and keeping the art style coherent. These act as references for our 3D artists who will create models and emphasize their cuteness with round shapes and cartoony proportions. Once their work gets approved by the team, it is transmitted to our animator who will bring the models to life and give them even more personality!

The Golem was the one that underwent the most drastic changes during the development of the game. It was important that its face and body could carry all the emotions we wanted to express through it. Throughout the adventure, the Golem will evolve as you manage to accept the emotions and find peace, growing flowers on its back.

We wanted the animals to look very friendly and adorable, which is why we opted for a slightly cartoony style, inspired by Pixar and Dreamworks movies: big eyes, blushy cheeks, soft round shapes.

Our objective for the environment was to make it very immersive and lively, as Nature has taken over every inch of this world. Plants, trees and flowers of all kinds of shapes and colors were imagined to set the decors.

 

The soundtrack is very important for us to transport the emotions of the game to the player. Our talented composer is currently re-creating the whole soundtrack from scratch.

We are inspired by the Ghibli movie "Castle in the Sky", and games like "RiME", "Journey" and "A Short Hike". Just like these games, we are creating a refreshing experience with a compelling world and unique interactions.

 

We care for our forests! For every backer, we will donate $1 to the association "Cool Earth".

 

Although the game doesn't contain text apart from the menus, we want to make it as accessible as possible. That's why we'll translate it in the following languages:
