The Producer
My name is Hulda Brynjólfsdóttir. I live on a farm in South of Iceland.
As well as farming with sheep and cattle, I am a handcrafter with a great love for everything made from wool.
My dream is to run a mini mill on my farm and make yarn from my own wool, as well as from local farmer’s wool.
I found a factory in Canada that makes machinery for small wool-mills. After looking very carefully into it, I and my family decided that starting our own business running a professional mini mill, will be the right next step for us.

What We Need & What You Get
The Product
The goal is to produce high quality Icelandic yarn from our own wool and the wool being produced here in the area. This wool will be handled more carefully and respectfully and the yarn will be softer than what is available on the market now.
It will be traceable back to the farm where it originates and you can be sure that all these animals are cared for in the best possible way. I will make yarn in the natural colors of the Icelandic sheep, and also bats for those who want to spin yarn by hand on their spinning wheel.
We believe that there is a huge and growing interest in good quality Icelandic made yarns straight from the farm – a market that currently is not supplied.
We are planning to start production in October 2017.

The Impact
In Iceland we have exceptional quality wool. But as everywhere farmers don't get fair price for their wool. I hope when my mill has started to sell high quality yarn and wool products for handcrafting and spinning, I can pay them fairer price.
The wool I yearn to work with is of the natural colors of the Icelandic sheep, which are very diverse. The Icelandic wool also has the spectacular quality of double fiber; tog and thel, which can be separated, the thel being so much softer than the tog or both of the materials bind together. Making yarn in natural colors and in softer yarn is bound to attract lovers of the true nature and I just know that we will have lots of buyers of our yarn.
By being able to pay farmers a higher price, than they get today, I hope to encourage them to put more weight into their wonderful product, being even more interested in breeding their sheep with fiber quality in mind. Considering the texture of their wool and the colors of the heard.
Equally importantly I intend to produce yarn and wool products to meet up with your needs for quality and artistic work. The yarn will be of natural colors of the sheep or plant-dyed. The softness will be of more variety and the thickness of the yarn will be up to the buyers desire.
So the numerous knitters, both in Iceland and abroad will be able to have additional yarn to choose from.

Risks & Challenges
The machinery cost a lot and I have to take a bank loan to get them to Iceland. We are the first one's to get a mini mill started in my country and we hear of lot of people who want to be able to buy that kind of yarn and wool products. I have also heard from my neighbor farmers that they are eager to sell me their wool for my production. Many of my neighbors have also shown interest in having their wool spun into yarn for their own use and I hope I can stand up to the expectations people are having for my mill. We are even asked by people from foreign countries for yarn to knit and crochet. So the demand is not only in our own country.

Við erum sunnlenskir sauðfjárbændur sem langar að auka tekjur sauðfjárbænda og um leið vinna úr hráefni sem hefur óendanlega möguleika í hverskyns listsköpun.
Við ætlum að flytja inn vélar frá Kanada til að spinna ull í band og selja hérlendis og erlendis. Garnið verður í náttúrulegum sauðalitum og heldur mýkra en það sem hægt er að fá vélspunnið hérlendis í dag. Einnig verður hægt að koma með ull til okkar og fá hana spunna að eigin óskum. Vélarnar eiga þar að auki að ráða við geitafiðu og vona ég að ég nái að æfa þá tækni ásamt ullarvinnslunni.
Á þessari síðu er hægt að styrkja verkefnið, annað hvort með framlagi að eigin ósk og fá þakklæti fyrir eða fyrirfram ákveðna upphæð sem gefur litla gjöf í þakklætisskyni. Hver gjöf telur, sama hversu stór eða lítil hún er. Því miður gat ég ekki haft þetta á íslensku annars vegar og öðru tungumáli hins vegar, en ég set inn örfá orð á íslensku þar sem því er viðkomið.
