Urban Prairie Waldorf School offers an education with compassion and connection with others at its core, in a world where empathy is frequently lacking. Rather than building walls between different schools of thought, we bridge divides to bring meaningful conversations to our classrooms and our parent community.

Our Past

Urban Prairie Waldorf School started as a dream with 11 families who were looking for a well-rounded education for their children while staying within city limits. Supported by our sister school, City Garden Waldorf School, we have grown from one class with 12 first graders in a former office space, to 160 first through eighth graders in 12 classrooms in a former parochial school in Chicago's Little Italy neighborhood. Our first class of graduates have all been accepted into their first choice of high schools, including selective enrollment public and top parochial high schools.

Our Present

UPWS students are challenged daily through a variety of classes:

  • Spanish                             Mandarin                            Chorus
  • Orchestra for third grade and up
  • Science from nature walks and botany to physics and chemistry
  • Math from addition and subtraction to geometry and algebra
  • Language arts blocks covering ancient civilizations, fable, poetry, writing biographies and more
  • History of civilizations from Egypt & China, Greece & Rome, Norse Myths & modern US history
  • Geography, economics, and culture across the ages and world
  • Handwork - Blacksmithing, knitting, crocheting, woodworking, felting, cross stitch, needlepoint, and embroidery
  • Recess at least twice a day
  • Movement, like gym class, but with a focus on community and cooperation as well as skills
  • Eurythmy, a type of therapuetic dance
  • Arts - beginning with crayons, colored pencils and water colors, graduating to charcoal drawings and pastels

In addition, they are socially supported through our Three streams of Student Support and

Gender inclusion policy.

Our parents support the programs offered, and continue to be learners themselves, attempting to create the soundest home environments for their children, attending workshops and parent nights, and contributing their time and efforts to make the school the best it can be.

Our Future

We have an opportunity to purchase a now-closed school that offers all the amenities we require to make our community flourish:

  • The site is large enough for our future curricular and programming space needs. There is a gym, kitchen, science labs, sunny classrooms, administrative offices, ample storage, and even a woodworking room with an automated dust ventilation system.
  • The school is ADA compliant, which means we can offer our education to a wider population.

  • A large paved area with southern sun can be converted to an ample outdoor green space and play area.
  • Move-in-ready condition with a solid structure will allow us to “dream into” this space as our permanent home. If we win the bid, we would move in for the 2018-19 school year.
  • This location is a stone’s throw from our current site, 1.5 miles of our sister school, City Garden, and close to major traffic arteries and public transportation. Situated across the street from a Costco, it has terrific visibility and will allow us to become the beacon for Waldorf education that we have always envisioned our school to be.

Our parent community is busy reaching out to their friends and family to help fund this endeavor. Join us and become a part of our Revolution in Education.
