Fund for Nepal Relief and Development

The recent earthquake in Nepal has devastated many communities, including homes, schools, businesses, temples, and important cultural heritage sites. The students of the class "Global Issues in Travel and Tourism" at the University of Southern Maine understand that the needs will be great in both the short and long term, and would like to contribute what they can.

Through this site they are raising funds from family members, friends and classmates to donate to several well-established emergency and community development funds serving Nepal, including the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation, the Seva Foundation, and other certified aid organizations selected by the students after the funds have been raised.

Students in this class have learned about the scope and impacts of global tourism, and looked specifically at Nepal and the role of the tourism industry there. They feel a special responsibility to support the people of Nepal as they rebuild their communities and economy following this natural disaster. The loss of another climbing season on Everest, destruction of trekking routes and tourism infrastructure, and the loss of irreplaceable World Heritage Sites will mean a devastating impact on the tourism industry, and the communities it supports, for years to come. This is of course on top of the human tragedy of loss of life and property, and of the medical, food and other needs at this time.

In a larger sense, the students in this class and in the Program in Tourism and Hospitality at USM believe in supporting communities around the world as they strive to achieve economic and environmental sustainability, whether or not this includes tourism. They would like to show their support for the people of Nepal and surrounding regions as they seek to recover from this latest disaster, and offer their support and encouragement in this time of great need.

Use of Funds

Students have set a goal of $1000, which will be donated to one or more funds that the students select after careful research on their financial management and their support of the goals of disaster recovery, community development and environmental protection in Nepal. Whatever amount is raised by the deadline will be immediately transferred to one or more such funds as selected by the students.

Perks for Donors

There are no material rewards for contributing to this fund, but know that you have the appreciation of students in this class, and the people in Nepal who will be helped by your generosity.
