Summary

Thanks for visiting my Indiegogo site! As you may or may not know, I'm Natalie. I'm a Communication Sciences & Disorders senior at Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne. Speech therapy is my passion, and being introduced to this field has presented me with unimaginable volunteer opportunities. Currently, I volunteer for the Homeless Coalition of Fort Wayne and HearCare Connection. HearCare Connection (http://hearcareconnection.org/) is a local nonprofit organization that provides low-income individuals with affordable hearing healthcare that is otherwise particularly expensive. The hearing aid/health recipients, along with local volunteers, bank volunteer hours at other nonprofit organizations, creating an innovative and community-based Circle of Giving®

I plan to join HearCare Connection on a  four-day, volunteer trip to Zambia. During the trip, individuals of Chisamba, Zambia who have hearing loss and do not have access to the hearing healthcare that they need will be fit with necessary hearing aids. Volunteers from Northeast Indiana will assist the audiologists in ear mold tasks, provide crowd control, play with the children who are waiting in long, exhausting lines, or a variety of other very necessary tasks. As much as I love helping my community here at home, I want to take my opportunities to different places throughout the world to help the global community, and that's where you come in!

The Impact Your Donations Provide

Funds provided will directly go towards my budget goal for the mission. The budget includes all meals, a Visa, travel insurance, immunizations, and travel expenses.

When a child has a hearing loss, and no means of accessing assistive devices, not only do they miss out on significant parts of life, such as hearing their mother's voice, but they will also struggle educationally. We all know the impacts that the lack of education and literacy can have within a society, and this mission greatly reduces the risk of these children becoming an educational statistic to the rest of the world. The added bonus is the happiness that floods their and their family's lives when they can finally hear.

Sending local volunteers to exotic places will also help your own community, especially volunteers like myself who are so close to entering the workforce. When volunteers travel outside of their own communities, they gain the ability to appreciate cultural differences, develop more significant social/relationship skills and acquire the want to carry out an organization's mission. These are strengths most would agree that they wish to see in all professionals.

Other Ways You Can Help

If you cannot contribute financially, that's okay! There are other ways you can help.

Share my goal with friends and family. I only know so many people!

Donate used hearing aids! Believe it or not, those old things sitting in someone's junk drawer might have the ability to be good as new for someone else.

Nonprofit organizations welcome volunteers with open arms, and contributing an hour a week to some sort of volunteer experience greatly impacts our community and, from my experience, makes you feel better about yourself.
