Our Story

A virulent new strain of SARS erupts in rural Alabama.  It can ignite a pandemic so the area is quickly placed under military quarantine.  Four scientists are selected to spearhead the race to find a vaccine, but their personal lives are on the verge of cracking.

Wax Wings is a new play by Matthew Maguire, directed by Michael Kimmel.

Wax Wings opens Wednesday May 25 at The Wild Project in NYC.

195 E. 3rd St, between Avenue A & B, New York, NY 10009

Wednesday through Saturday, May 25-June 11 at 8PM

Matthew Maguire is a co-artistic director of Creation Production Company--with which he has produced over fifty new works--and the Director of Fordham University's Theatre Program.  He is a proud alumnus of New Dramatists and the NYU Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.  His plays include Phaedra, and Abandon, and the creation with Philip Glass and Molissa Fenley of A Descent Into the Maelström for Australia's Adelaide Festival, among many others.  His most recently published book (NoPassport Press, 2009) is Matthew Maguire: Three Plays, which includes The Tower, Luscious Music, and The Desert.  His awards include an OBIE for Acting and an OBIE for Directing.

Michael Kimmel is the creator/adaptor of The Last Goodbye, a musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet with the music of Jeff Buckley.  The Last Goodbye premiered as a part of The Williamstown Festival's 2010 season in Massachusetts.  TLG was virtually sold out months in advance, and, critically acclaimed, became the highest grossing production to ever grace Williamstown's Nikos Theatre.

The Impact

Wax Wings was commissioned by the Emory College Center for Creativity & Arts funded by the University-wide Creativity & the Arts Strategic Initiative, the Playwriting Center of Theatre Emory and the Creative Writing Program.

Emory's intention was to bring Matthew Maguire as a playwright to Emory to attend a conference on the science of Evolution, and to commission him to respond with a play about the science.  The second stage of the process was to invite Maguire back to Emory's Brave New Works Festival to workshop the first draft.  Further development was done in readings at New Dramatists.  Then Maguire created a solo from the four characters and performed it at the invitation of Jeffrey Jones for Little Theatre at Dixon Place.

The production is supported by New York State Council on the Arts, foundations, and individuals, but there remains a substantial gap between the necessary production budget and the funds on hands.  Your contribution will literally pay the actors.

What We Need & What You Get

We need $4,000 to meet the payroll gap for the artists, the actors, and the technicians.

Contributors will get program acknowledgment and an invitation to an opening night cast party.
