Overview
The book is a dystopian fiction novel about mental health, and it follows Lacey Matthews as she realizes the importance of reaching out for help when she needs it— a message I think everyone needs to hear! I wrote it because I wish that I had heard something like this when I was younger, and I want to put out a message about mental health that matters deeply to me. My book will publish in December of 2019.

Story of My Book

We Pretend They’re Fireworks is a dystopian fiction novel about mental health and, just as importantly, the importance of not being afraid to reach out for help when you need it. Follow Lacey Matthews, the main protagonist, as she learns the importance of reaching out after periods of hardship.

My name is Hannah Kernal and I am the Author of We Pretend They’re Fireworks. I wrote this book because I believe that I have an important message about mental health that needs to be put out there! I really needed to hear something like this story when I was younger and dealing with mental health for the first time. I hope that I'll be able to pass on what I've learned to someone who might need it now or in the future.

My hope is that, in reading this book, you will be able to connect with Lacey and her closest friends as they figure out what the heck they’re doing. In this book, I hope to instill the same sort of passion and excitement that I have for mental health in you. And then, ultimately, I want you to see this book as something that encourages you to reach out for help when you need it. There is no shame in asking for help!

In this book, you'll read about Lacey's journey with mental health, the importance of interpersonal relationships and support networks, and the equal importance of reaching out to that support network when she's having a difficult time, as well as how her learning these things is a positive influence on the people around her.

You will love this book if you love dystopian fiction or conversations about mental health.
We Pretend They’re Fireworks is a dystopian fiction novel that speaks to young adults and those who take an interest in mental health who are interested in increasing their mental wellbeing, who want to increase mental health awareness, and who want to read a story about both of those things

The Book - We Pretend They’re Fireworks

The novel comes from the point of view of Lacey Matthew, a half white and half Asian girl who is living in Pennyworth. The novel begins with her best friend, Blue, attempting to commit suicide. With limitations on how socially acceptable emotions are in her hometown, Lacey has to figure out how the heck she’s supposed to survive mental health issues (Blue’s and her own) and an onslaught of other issues coming down and around her.

We Pretend They’re Fireworks takes place in a small American town, Pennyworth, where the people in power have decided that being anything but happy is out of the social norm. Citizens of Pennyworth are taught from a young age to keep their “chin up” in public and to deal with their “problems” on their own.

I decided to write this book as a dystopian fiction because it’s one of my absolute favorite genres to read, and because the genre really strongly lends itself to satire and social commentary, which is really what We Pretend They’re Fireworks is. It’s a social commentary about the fact that the social norm is one that shuns the reality of emotional vulnerability; something that everyone (including me!) has, unfortunately, been subject to historically.

About the Author

Hannah Lin Kernal is an English student at UCLA, as well as a competitive ballroom dancer, singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist. She also has a blog she has dubbed “Just a Musing Student,” which can be found at JustaMusingStudent.Wordpress.com.

She wrote this book because she has a deep passion for mental health and has had many experiences with the fictional events that take place in the book, including depression and sexual assault. She believes that everyone should find people to whom they’re comfortable talking and that bottled up emotions can serve to exacerbate problems, mental health-related or otherwise.

Hannah is also a full-time klutz and a betta fish mom. You can probably find her playing Animal Crossing, being overly concerned for Percy the fish’s health, or getting excited about stationery and bullet journaling.

Risks & Challenges

The biggest challenge with publishing a book is delivering the finished book to the backer, specifically my mailing of the book to you. I have eliminated this risk by building into the campaign the mailing and shipping costs of your signed copies to you within each pre-order tier.

The risk of delivering the pre-sale copies of my book is contingent on the publisher we use. I will be working closely with New Degree Press to make sure we get the earliest possible ship date of the signed book copy to you. We will keep all pre-sale backers up-to-date as my book hits each key milestone and publishes. You will know when the copies of my book you pre-ordered are expected to ship.

Other Ways You Can Help

Some people just can't contribute, but that doesn't mean they can't help:

Please Share my Pre-sale Campaign on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn with your friends, family and network. Please use #WePretendTheyreFireworks and tag me as well as my publisher, New Degree Press (@NewDegreePress) so we can help amplify your efforts.

You can easily share my Pre-Sale Campaign Page via Indiegogo at the top of the page

Please share my book to 5 friends, family members, or co-workers who you think would enjoy it. Please do this as a text message or Direct Message on social media.

Thank you so much of all of your love and support!

Best wishes!
