PLAYWRIGHT- REVOLUTIONARY
Dr. Zulu Sofola's creative writing explored and sparked an interest in Africa's rich traditions which she portrayed through the culture of her people. Her work also captured the perceived conflicts between western culture and African value systems. A distinguished academician, Professor Zulu Sofola wrote numerous articles and presentations, and is still considered one of the great minds of African Literary Arts.
Zulu Sofola recorded seventeen plays, fifteen of which were published. The themes of her plays ranged from tragedy, comedy, satire, crime, gender equality, and love, all cleverly woven between historical facts and the current societal issues of her time. WEDLOCK OF THE GODS
Before there was Nollywood or Nigeria’s booming television and film industry, there was traditional West African theatre. Wedlock of the Gods is at heart a love story reminiscent of Shakespeare’s most beloved tale, Romeo and Juliet. Set in a small village, religious traditions are broken when a young woman defies the law of the land by reconnecting with her true love after the death of her much older betrothed husband. Wedlock of the Gods is a delicious mellow drama, full of suspense, introducing the audience to the depth and intensity that is the essence of Nigerian theatre. You will be moved!
