The Show
In a nutshell: WEIGHT is an internet comedy which picks up as Claire, a middle class mom, returns home from a reality weight loss competition 100 pounds lighter but finds she’s gained some extra baggage due to the mixed and sometimes absurd reactions of her dysfunctional family and friends. The smart comedy in the vein of Little Miss Sunshine combines America’s obsession with weight loss and reality television for a look at how weight can bring together and also divide people.
The dramedy examines the complications that ensue as Claire attempts to balance her new regimen and newfound fame/infamy with the realities of needy children, a stressed out husband, nosy relatives, a competitive sibling, judgmental friends, food temptations, and her own unraveling mind, as she deals with the day to day pressures of staying thin and appearing on a reality show.
The Inspiration
We live in a weight crazy country. I am fascinated by everyday issues that make people act crazy. Like money. In my previous series Downsized, middle class New Yorkers attempted to adjust to the absurdities of life during the economic crisis when the fear of not having money made people lose their minds. In Weight, I examine the age old adage that weight makes people act totally crazy.
The Team
I have assembled a dream team! I mean it! A digital native in myself (I was nominated for a Writers Guild Award, you know!), two-time Emmy Award winning actress and producer Martha Byrne whom you probably know as Lily Snyder from “As The World Turns,” who has this amazing ability to be both emotionally available and totally hilarious at the same time, and a primetime television native in veteran network television producer and director Frederick King Keller (“Crisis,” “24,” “Blue Bloods”). Seriously. And there are more amazingly talented people involved, which we will announce soon!
What We Need & What You Get
We need everyone to rally to help raise $15,000 to shoot a pilot for the web, which sounds like a lot but really is an itty bitty amount to produce the kind of show we want to make. We are asking for your help because we have a small window in July when we can shoot this before the television shooting schedule starts and we lose Fred and some of our production team, which would be a bummer! Because everyone is really excited to make this!
The Impact
No show has really looked at weight this way (I think... although I did looooove Roseanne.) Weight looks at how weight brings together and divides people through the lens of a dysfunctional middle class family and touches on contemporary issues like reality television, extreme weight loss, parenting, sex and sexism, and fat empowerment. And makes it all funny and touching! We think you’ll be talking about this show a lot... so it'll be even cooler to be a part of the team that helped make it. Join our Weight family!
