Why We Can't Wait--We the People..14
As I sat (after a whole lot of movement) around the table with my family of African American and European American children; parents-in-law; and my Michael, I smiled. We've been through a lot in 2017. We're not yet three years married and we have five teens, a guinea pig, Jake the chocolate lab, and a fish named Robert who has managed to survive with minimal care over a year.
Sometimes we have conversations about white supremacy culture, racism, and classism--and how they are showing up in our family. That's not easy--but we really want authentic relationship and connection, so we do it. Sometimes it's a simple pointing out of something; sometimes it takes days for something to get clear. But we labor. Together.
Theatre for Transformation is a space where Michael and I get to channel what we are learning, feeling and cultivating both personally and societally. Our poetry and music are immediate and, like all good art, also crafted over time.
About a year ago I started to dream up what we could do to inspire people to stand their ground for what it means to be American. I don't mean Trump's white supremacist nightmare. I mean the vision that Frederick Douglass, Viola Liuzzo, Yuri Kochiama, and Dolores Huerta worked toward.
To me the 14th Amendment with its promise of citizenship, life, liberty and equal protection of the law, and due process captures that vision of America. The 14th Amendment is turning 100 years old in 2018, and I want to use that anniversary to TRUMPET this vision!
We've already started doing that through our We the People ... 14, an arts and community-building project that includes After-School clubs at Reynolds Middle School; commissioning of emerging artists; and planning a music video.
But we have more to do! We need to get the word out. We want to:
Fortunately, a friend has offered to match any funds we raise between now and Dec. 18 up to $7500. This means that we could have $15,000 to pay artists to create and facilitate art about the 14th Amendment. We can honor their time and genius when they represent Theatre for Transformation at march or a concert setting. We can take our bold vision of justice and hope out there without worrying about what "funders" will think.
Now is the time for you to step up and support that art.
Dr. King's exhortation of good, moderate folks rings true today--we can't wait. Please give. Give like you mean it. You can give online or you can write a check to Theatre for Transformation 342 N. Queen St. (Rear); Lancaster, PA 17603
This is our first matching grant, please help us to make the MOST of this opportunity by giving now.
Peace and love,
Amanda
P.S.--Theatre for Transformation is a 501c3. So you get that tax incentive!
