Wicklow Stories: Mountains

The Wicklow Stories project was born out of a script call out in January of 2021 in the Wicklow filmmaking group No Wifi.

No Wifi have been producing independent short films in and around Wicklow for more than half a decade and have seen many projects come to life.

Brian Matthews-Murphy wanted to create a flagship project for the group, so when screenwriter and director Ronika Merl sent in the anthology script "The Pier", it soon became clear that this was the way forward.

So Wicklow Stories: The Pier was born. The project went into production in March 2022.

Very soon into production, the project took on a life of its own, culminating in the Wicklow Stories Film Festival, which is held on the 8th of October 2022 in the Whale Theatre in Greystones, and brings together communities from all over the county with visual arts, music, and a whole array of other short films being shown.  This is the first of its kind film festival in the county and has garnered a lot of attention from local press.

The Wicklow Stories Anthology was always intended to be an annual series, in which we explore different parts of Wicklow life, explore the people, explore the landscapes, and the unique ways in which Wicklow inspires artists.

The next installment of the anthology will be centered around the Mountains in this beautiful county.

The story will be similar to last year's project "The Pier" and will center around conversations, relationships, and interesting insights into life in Wicklow.

What We Need & What You Get

We will go into production in March of 2023, with a deadline of May 31st.

In order to make next year's short film, we will need help in buying lunches, bringing cast and crew to and from set, renting equipment, obtaining permits and insurance.

This is a passion project that is run by a group of artists who work their fingers to the bone to make an impactful and important piece of contemporary art - unpaid. The donations will go to feeding them, driving them, and filming them.

The Wicklow Stories projects are made by locals for locals, with a focus on newcomers. Directors who have never had the chance to give a project their specific voice, filmmakers who have never been on set, crewmembers who are learning their trade, and talent who have never had their face on the big screen - they all get a chance to work on something extraordinary.

We have made sure from the very beginning, that this project is a starting point for fresh voices, and will continue in this proud tradition with Wicklow Stories: Mountains.

Challenges

Independent filmmaking is always driven by one thing: Passion.

Brian, Ronika, and Marlena have driven this project for more than a year with just the love of it to sustain them. By bringing in other people, they are now able to make the project grow even further.

Scheduling, availability, and low budget have traditionally been the biggest hurdles in getting independent films over the finish line.

But the production team is well used to these challenges and has risen above them time and time again.
