Synopsis
Wilted is short drama film about Kairan and Jasmine, a couple who have suffered a devastating tragedy that has changed them and left them and their relationship both scarred and ... wilted. The strain and guilt over their loss lay the foundation to a pathway of multiple forms of abuse including: physical, emotional, mental, sexual, and financial. This is Kairan’s story.
Who I am and why I need your support
My name is Liane Moonraven. I am an American filmmaker, now living in England for the past two and a half years. In 2018, between February and November, I wrote and produced five short, self-funded films. This year I was prompted to write a script about male-victim domestic violence. All shooting is completed including principle and b-roll. I am raising funds to finish the project, now in post-production. I have never asked for help before, but this time I need your assistance in seeing the film through post-production completion.
From the National Domestic Violence Hotline website: Domestic violence (also called intimate partner violence (IPV), domestic abuse or relationship abuse) is a pattern of behaviours used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence includes behaviours that physically harm, arouse fear, prevent a partner from doing what they wish or force them to behave in ways they do not want. It includes the use of physical and sexual violence, threats and intimidation, emotional abuse and economic deprivation. Many of these different forms of domestic violence/abuse can be occurring at any one time within the same intimate relationship.
The Impact
Wilted will bring much-needed awareness to male-victim domestic violence. Men are less likely to reveal that they have been victims of domestic abuse because of society's expectation that men shouldn't show emotional vulnerability or "weakness". Men often question their manhood or masculinity when being abused by a female domestic (or non-domestic) partner.
Here are some startling facts about male-victim domestic violence. Did you know:
- Domestic abuse affects an estimated 700,000 male victims every year.
- Men are less likely to be victims of domestic violence, but they are also less likely to talk about it.
- Male victims are over three times as likely as women to keep their abuse a secret, or refuse to tell the police or medical professionals.
- 15% of men aged 16 to 59 have experienced some form of domestic abuse since the age of 16, equivalent to an estimated 2.4 million male victims.
- For every three victims of domestic abuse, one will be male.
- One in six to seven men suffer from domestic abuse in their lifetime.
- In 2017, Jordan Worth, was the first woman in the UK to ever be convicted of male domestic abuse. She has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison.
