MISSION
60% of the climate changing global emissions are issued while producing consumers goods (source IPCC): this sheds light on how important it is to change the products that will be consumed by the market into sustainable ones so as to reverse the major environmental phenomena.
But those products really need to make the difference, both by attracting the consumer as being the best one to choose and as really making a difference in term of global environmental and social care.
Our school wishes to provide the right education to wine industry professionals, a rigorous value chain just like many others, in particular granting scholarships to those managers of small firms in this sector who have limited access to qualified information and research.
WHO WE ARE
The Salcheto winery and the Siena University are the first promoters of this project, after having developed, in the last 7 years, a network of over 30 institutions (universities, government bodies, research centers) specialized in sustainable wine development.
Salcheto is also the winery with many international firsts, such as the “off-grid”
cellar, and the most complete certified study on wine carbon footprint (www.salcheto.it).
The Siena University, among the oldest academic institutions in the world (founded 1240), has strongly invested in sustainability and is the headquarters for the Mediterranean region of the United
Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (www.sdsn-mediterranean.unisi.it) and the head of the PRIMA
project (www.unisi.it/programma-prima).
WHAT WILL
THE FUNDS BE USED FOR?
The School by itself does not require any headquarters or facilities in general (it would not be sustainable considering how many already exists), but rather is seeking support to cover the on -going start-up costs
(administrative and promotion of €.21.500). Most of the funds raised will be used to provide 10 Scholarships, for a total amount of €.72.500, to the
first Master in Wine Sustainability – Marketing and Business Management. The
funding is also supported through Perks by products and services from Salcheto Winery. When taken by backers instead of other donations, the
company will cover the production cost (an average of 40%) and use the
remaining funds, net of tax and campaign commissions, for the school start-up
and scholarships. Another way to make those proudly sustainable products a good business.
If the funds raised exceed what requested, the
School will be able to increase the number of scholarships given and/or start further
courses. The first Master in Wine Sustainability will be offered in
September 2016. Please have a look to our website for further details on this project (www.thewineschool.it).
