ViviendasLeon starts small, women-run businesses in the indigenous region of Sutiava, Leon, Nicaragua.  This is part of a long term, integrated plan to create sustainable development for hundreds of families living in rural poverty.  The Sewing Co-op is the first of many planned projects that provide the first-ever, women operated employment in this region.

The campaign seeks funding for six new electric sewing machines that will greatly increase productivity, create permanent employment and expand the market for this co-op.  Without this support, the co-op will not reach a level of production that will provide for the women who work there, throwing them back into the poverty they want to escape.

$5,000 will purchase the new sewing machines, and provide for a much needed infusion of operating funding to purchase large quantities of raw materials at favorable prices.  A secure work place has been acquired.  The only remaining piece is the funding for equipment and materials.  All funds acquired through this campaign will go to supporting the co-op and its operations.

ViviendasLeon has a track record of success in programs ranging from school construction, education support, reforestation and agro-forestry, and arts education.  See our work and programs at:  www.viviendasleon.org
