Overview
This production, based on real events in the playwrights life, tackles the difficult issue of being raised under strict religious dogma. Elyse Evans, a former Jehovah's Witness, has crafted a fascinating piece wherein she recalls the history of her relationships while being raised in the religion. Steven Modena and Elyse Evans are freelance theatre artists working in Minnesota. Together, with a team of dedicated artists, they are working to bring an important story to life.

Introduction

Hello. My name is Steven Modena. I am a passionate and dedicated theatre artist living and working in the Twin Cities. I have launched this Indiegogo Campaign because I believe that this story, written and performed by my colleague and friend Elyse Evans, has a strong and empowering message that deserves to be put out into the world.

We are seeking funds to support this production and the artists that are lending their time, talent, and complete dedication to putting the show together.

DOOR TO DOOR

"What do you think Armageddon will look like?"

An Arts Nest Fledgling Project Performed at the Phoenix Theater in Minneapolis, MN.

Produced with assistance from Metropolitan State University and Theatre Underground.

PLOT
Years after leaving the Jehovah’s Witnesses, a young woman reflects on her life and being raised in the religion. With a chorus serving as an extension of her own mind, she delves into the history of her past relationships with friends, family, enemies, and lovers. Armed with righteous indignation and a love of film, she explores what it means to find your own beliefs. A captivating journey of sex, religious dogma, and movies.

Door to Door is a new play that asks very difficult questions about how people who are raised in strict religious communities, particularly young women, can discover their own thoughts and feelings about religion and spirituality. The playwright, Elyse Evans has crafted a captivating piece that is based on her real life experiences being raised in the Jehovah's witnesses. In the play she explores how religion had colored her view of the world and how it impacted her and her relationships with friends and family. The play is about female empowerment and the personal struggles of leaving a religion.

Elyse, a movie buff with a deep passion for classic film, has interwoven her life story with her love of cinema into a hilarious, exciting, tragic, heartfelt, and powerful piece of theater.

What are we seeking funds for?

By contributing to our campaign, you can help us make this production the best it can possibly be. At this time, we are almost completely self funded. The cast and crew, with the help of fellow artists, a local Theater, and a College, are providing costumes, set pieces, props, and rehearsal space all on their own.
By donating you will help us offset our initial costs, provide us with a functional yet simple set, and help to provide stipends for our Directors, Stage Manager, Performers, costumers, set designers, photographer, and board operators.

  • We are seeking 500 Dollars to help purchase props, costume pieces, and set building materials. Funds will also go towards providing stipends to the performers and crew working on the show. We currently have a Director, Assistant Director/Costumer, Stage Manager, Playwright, four Performers, Set Designer and builders, and Sound Designer. All of which are working for a portion of ticket sales.
  • We have no grants or outside funding. Arts Nest and the Phoenix Theater have generously provided a performance venue to Elyse as a candidate for the Fledgling program. Through this program, local artists are given an opportunity to develop new work and explore their artistic vision with a team of fellow performers and artists. Metropolitan State University has provided rehearsal space and access to student help. Your contribution will help us to build this world that the playwright has so elegantly created on the page.
  • Donors will receive perks for their contributions. Perks include mentions in our programs, signed posters from our promotional material, and even tickets to performances of the show!

The Impact

This story is powerful. This story is important.

As artists we believe that it is our job to articulate deep personal truths about ourselves and about society. Through theatre, we believe that we can change minds and tackle big issues.

Additionally, we are providing a product. A fun and entertaining night of theatre with a powerful message.

In our current political climate where arts funding is in danger, we hope that you will support us in this endeavor.
