Story of My Book
Yellow Boxes is a book that follows a half-Korean girl searching for her mother in a dream world that twists and coils her reality irreparably. At the same time, an auntie appears, urging beautifully wrapped yellow presents onto the girl and her nine sisters.
My name is Eun Hye Kim and I am the author of
Yellow Boxes. I wrote this book because I've always been fascinated with dream and alternate worlds, particularly the strange ways in which the familiar manifests and lingers with us, even into our wakening.
My hope is that, in reading this book, you will identify with what seeps in and takes shape for a tightly-enclosed family of ten girls in their mother's absence. Through this book, I want people to see their own family beyond their given roles of
mother, father, sister, aunt... My immigrant parents work six days a week, which has accumulated into almost two decades now, in the consuming life of running a restaurant. It is bittersweet to compare the parents I know with the people they were in the faded photos of old albums, when they used to be called by their names – not only someone's mother or father. Ultimately I hope you can come out of this book seeking to understand the people closest to us more carefully, especially the parts of them that are still strange to you, before it is too late.
In this book, you'll learn about love, and the ways in which it sustains and destroys people:
- Yeo-deol, the main character, who tries to trace back to the root of maternal love
- Daddy, who chases a great, divine love
- Mama, who is haunted by the ghostly strings of fated love
You will love this book if you have a taste for magical realism and stories that bring you back to familial relationships, and the different way we tug at and tie ourselves within them.
Yellow Boxes is a fiction book that speaks to young adults emerging into their own lives who are looking at their identity within and outside of their family.
The Book - Yellow Boxes
The book sets out on the day that Yeo-deol Henderson turns 29 years old – the same age as her Mama was the winter that she disappeared, leaving Yeo-deol's father and nine other sisters in a desolate house. Yeo-deol goes back to this winter 14 years ago, when she slept through most of the days and a woman claiming to be their auntie began to ring their doorbell, offering beautifully wrapped yellow presents.

About the Author
Eun Hye Kim is graduating from the University of Washington in fall 2019 with a double degree in creative writing and business administration with a focus in marketing. She worked for her school newspaper, The Daily, and served as the prose editor of Bricolage, a literary and visual arts student journal.
Eun Hye wrote this book during her last year of college in an honest fear for the day she might not be writing anymore. Her stories thread the twisted and tender faces of familial love, and false nostalgia relating to immigration and the displacement of home.
Aside from typing on her red MacBook with red headphones, Eun Hye can be found reapplying her red lipstick before carefully sipping an iced coffee. She adores bunnies, listening to the Korean singer IU, Korean dramas, and eating pizzas choked with garlic.

Risks & Challenges
The biggest challenge with publishing a book is delivering the finished book to the backer, specifically my mailing of the book to you. I have eliminated this risk by building into the campaign the mailing and shipping costs of your signed copies to you within each pre-order tier.
The risk of delivering the pre-sale copies of my book is contingent on the publisher we use. I will be working closely with New Degree Press to make sure we get the earliest possible ship date of the signed book copy to you. We will keep all pre-sale backers up-to-date as my book hits each key milestone and publishes. You will know when the copies of my book you pre-ordered are expected to ship.
