Jane, a young woman who has recently suffered from a nervous breakdown goes on a trip with her husband. He tries to cure her depression with drastic actions, by locking her in a room with ugly, yellow wallpaper. As Jane’s mental state begins to deteriorate, she has convinced herself that the wallpaper is alive.
I am currently a student at Stephens College, majoring in digital filmmaking. Yellow is my senior capstone project. I first read the Yellow Wallpaper in High School. The story stuck with me. It indulged my love of history and reminded me that I wasn’t alone in my struggle with my own mental health and how brave one has to be a woman in a patriarchal society. I decided I would try to adapt a more modern version of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s classic story.
Like the Yellow Wallpaper, in my film, the main character's mental illness is not properly treated and she is regularly gaslighted by her husband. Their marriage showcases recognizable toxicity.
The wallpaper will be the most technically difficult and important aspect of the film. To create this, it will be a collaboration of local artists.
