Ylanna's Extra Butterfly is a beautiful story about family, love, and celebrating the EXTRA special differences in all of us from the perspective of a family with a loved one with special needs.

Working Synopsis
In a place not too far away, when you're born, you're gifted beautiful butterflies representing everything unique about you, 46 to be exact. But what happens when you get 47? Ylanna has an extra butterfly. Follow along as her family learns that you can go a long way with a little bit of EXTRA.

Based on a true story, Ylanna's Extra Butterfly gently touches on life with developmental delays and how disabilities don't have to define us. With extra help, attention, and patience, Ylanna experiences life with few limitations and abundant love.

Our Why
According to the Cooperative Children's Book Center's 2019 study, only 3.4% of children's books have main characters with disabilities. Compare this statistic with the CDC's finding that 26% of Americans have disabilities. Children's books are currently doing a disserve to our children. We need to show them many ways bodies and people exist and interact with the world. We create better humans by teaching them love, kindness, and acceptance early. That teaching happens through their environment and the content they consume, books, music, television, and more.

Additionally, we want to eliminate this harmful stereotype that people with disabilities are a burden to their families. Instead, we want to publish and amplify an authentic, loving, and positive representation.

Meet Ylanna! She was born with Trisomy, a genome anomaly where there are three copies of a chromosome on her 23rd paired chromosome. Though she faces many unique challenges in society, she possesses an intensity and courage that is unmatched by many, and her generous, benevolent spirit makes her a magnet of kindness & support. This book is inspired by her and the EXTRA special community of people with disabilities and developmental delays that we love.
