Stream High-Quality Audio Underwater

We believe that the inability to stream audio in the water is a critical barrier to widespread enjoyment of swimming and other water sports. We developed Zygo to enable high-quality streaming audio with any phone (or audio source). Play Spotify, a podcast, audio book, or Peloton-style guided workouts using the Zygo App.

Non-Invasive Bone Conduction Technology

The Zygo headset uses bone conduction to send audio through vibrations against the zygomatic arch, leaving your ears open for comfort and safety. 

Completely Wireless 

Out of the box, Zygo comes with: a headset, transmitter, and charging case. The headset and transmitter connect wirelessly, so you can stream all of your audio cord-free. The carrying case doubles as a charging station. Using the micro USB cable that comes with it, plug the case into any outlet to charge both units simultaneously.  

Bluetooth can't penetrate the water, so we use a radio frequency transmitter as middleman. The transmitter stays on land with your phone and streams its audio to the headset. It doubles as a walkie-talkie for real time one-way communication.

Zygo is the only technology that lets you stream live, online audio underwater from your favorite apps. 

Range 

The exact range depends on how deep you are and the type of water (salt water versus fresh water makes a big difference). At 2 feet below the surface in a chlorinated swimming pool, the range should be 50 meters. Since our head is normally at the surface when we swim, the range should be greater in most cases. Above the water - for activities like standup paddle boarding and windsurfing - the range is up to half a mile.

Live One-Way Communication

The handheld transmitter doubles as a walkie talkie with a built-in push-to-talk mic that allows anyone to reach you, be it for real time coaching or a safety alert.

Our Story

Like all kids, we loved swimming when we were little. Jumping into the water gave us a fun, carefree way to cool off on hot summer days in our hometown of LA.

As we got older, swimming disappeared from our lives until we realized, as 30-year olds, that we hadn’t enjoyed swimming for decades. We watched boutique fitness studios turn other sports into engaging, community-driven activities, while swimming appeared solitary, intimidating, and monotonous. Where was the innovation?

We loved group fitness classes, and wanted a similar experience in the pool where we could improve our strokes and stamina with real-time instruction, encouragement, and music. It would be low-impact and full-body - the perfect addition to our fitness routines. We couldn't find such a class, so we designed one ourselves.

Our first company, SwimTeam, gave participants an entertaining and convenient way to build confidence in the pool by making it social and stress-free in a 45-minute swimming-based group exercise class. But recreating the studio environment in the pool was no easy feat. It’s the high-energy playlist and charismatic instruction of SoulCycle and Barry's Bootcamp that make those classes so popular. We needed an elegant way to transmit live instruction and music to our swimmers. After months of attempting to hack existing technologies to fit our needs, we realized that the ideal solution did not exist. We never planned on becoming a hardware company, but we quickly realized that everyone else wanted this product too.

So two years ago, we set off to create Zygo, and now we’re on the cusp of sharing it with the world. Hardware is hard, as the saying goes. And expensive. We’ve raised angel money thus far in order to make our vision a reality, and every penny has gone into product development.

World-Class Partners

We assembled a team of top design and engineering talent to overcome the many challenges involved in a product of this complexity. 
 

LA-based product development studio Boombang created the Zygo industrial design. They based the shape of the transmitter after the “g” in our logo, and included other clever details like having the headset's two bone conduction holders resemble water drops.

The Five Nine is not your traditional digital agency. Based in LA, they specialize in crafting and executing big ideas for clients both large (Nike) and small (Zygo) in a nimble and down-to-earth approach. They helped us with creative direction, content creation, photography, videography, and post production. 

Design consultancy Outerspace leveraged their experience with waterproof products to devise Zygo's complex mechanical engineering solution, and guide us through the tooling process and first production run. With offices in Melbourne and San Diego, they were able to work seamlessly with our US and China partners.
