Jenny Syonesa sacrificed her life to save her family during a house fire...

On July 28th 2012, a tragic event changed the lives of my family forever. We suffered a tremendous loss, my mom. A house fire claimed my mom’s life. The only thing the fire left behind were ashes and a hole in my heart that can never be replaced.

My name is Victoria Phommachanh, I'm 14 years old. And here is my story...

On Saturday morning of July 28th, 2012 around 4am, my dog Max started to bark and jumped frantically when he smelled the smoke. Max bit my dad’s nose to warn him, but he didn’t wake. So, then he bit my mom’s. He jumped around them waking my parents up. My parent’s then woke up and asked Max, “What’s wrong with you?” By then my mom smelled the smoke and my dad opened the blinds to see what was going on because he could see the police lights. Then he saw the fire blazing outside on the porch.

My dad grabbed my mom’s arms and ran into the hallway towards my room. When he turned to look down the stairs as they were running passed it, they could see the fire coming up. My mom hysterically said, “Save Victoria first!” then followed by, “Gabe! Gabe! Gabe!”. She was frightened for my sister in-law and my nephew who were still upstairs on the top floor. My dad told my mom, “You get out first!”

My parents ran into my room and my dad yanked my arm and yelled, “Let’s go!”. I asked, “Go where!?” but he didn’t answer. I grabbed onto my dog Mojo in my other arm and hurried out the room. I was still drowsy and wasn’t aware of the fire. Once I stepped out of my room, I started smelling the smoke. I looked around to see what was going on, but it was too smokey to see anything. All I heard was my parents gasping for air. We turned to go down the stairs but we noticed the smoke and fire rushing up into the hallway. We turned around and went into the far end bedroom.

My mom was still screaming for the other two people upstairs. My mom kept telling my dad to save me first. I couldn’t fit through the window, so my dad ended up breaking the glass. I was suppose to jump out the window, but I was too scared. I ended up clinging onto my dad. My mom repeated herself, yelling to save me first. My dad had to let my mom go out of his other hand so he could use that hand to pry my fingers off of his arm, while yelling, “Let Daddy go, I have to save Mommy!” and then he shoved me out the window. I fell and knocked out for a little bit.

The fire rushed into the room my parents were in, the impact of the air and fire forced my dad out the window. He fell out the window and landed next to me. He got up then started climbing the pipe along the siding to go back and save my mom. The fire blew again and he fell off the pipe, knocking out. He woke up again and attempted to go up the pipe again, but the police came and started pulling him down by the leg. My dad kept yelling, “Let me go, I have to save my wife!”

While I was walking up and down the alley yelling for my mom and waving my arms because of my second-third degree burns, my dad was running around the house trying to find a way to get in. By then there were more people stopping him from going inside. As we were being taken into the ambulance, we could hear my sister in-law yelling “Help me! Help me!” while my nephew was crying.

-------------------------------

I lost my mom and heroic dog that early morning to a fire. My family hasn’t been the same since. We suffered from smoke inhalation, but my 2 1/2 years old nephew, Gabe, suffered the most and was hospitalized the longest. I have been back and forth to the hospital to have my burned arms looked after. My dad was released from the hospital but then has gone back twice to the emergency room because his lungs wasn’t coping, his high blood pressure increased dangerously and these were a few of the many things he was dealing with.

A few days ago, my dad and I were able to go back into the house to see if we could recover anything. When we walked in, everything was so damaged. It brought tears to all of us. There was barely anything we could save. It has sadden me so much to watch my dad go through the burnt items to find my mom's favorite things to bury with her and to see him struggle to cover all the costs. And I know it’s only the beginning of the many costs that is about to come, nonetheless the medical bills.

From my heart, I ask for anyone to help my family put our lives back together the best we can. We need a new home and so many more things that it's too much to think of. I start school in one month and I’m afraid of what people might ask about the tragic fire that took my mom’s life. I know I have to prepare myself for what is to come.

I hope one day that my dad, nephew, sister in-law and I can look back on this day and feel the pain lifted from our hearts so we can laugh and relive the memories of my mom with a smile.

I am so grateful for your thoughts, prayers and support of me and my family.

With a gracious thank you,

Victoria Phommachanh
