I am a writer, documentary filmmaker and evacuee from Hurricane Katrina. I have long been interested in the struggles and strengths of people displaced from their homes. I worked for many years filming in refugee camps around the world for the United Nations Refugee agency (UNHCR), the International Red Cross and others. I also co-wrote a film about the post-Katrina lives of black Catholic parishioners living in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans. That work and my own experience with Hurricane Katrina led me to learn more about the physical and mental health effects of living in FEMA trailers. Children have been hit hard by today's housing crisis. I'll be working with a team of writers and photographers to document their stories. The results will become a multi-media exhibit that we will take to neighborhoods around Los Angeles to generate discussion about the conditions of urban life for poor kids. Young people can be incredibly insightful and resourceful. We want to hear from them about fundamental solutions to childhood poverty.
