Driven to Create a Better World

I was raised to always seek a higher purpose in everything I do. Life is short, and there are way too many people seeking only to enrich themselves, better their lot, and fill the holes in their lives with stuff for me to be another person keeping up with Mr or Ms Jones. As the Tao says, the sage competes against no one, and therefore no one can compete against the sage.

Yet inaction and striving for spiritual balance only goes so far in creating the place you want for yourself in the world. The ancient Greeks had it that 'poesis', or 'creation' was the divine spark within each of us- the promethean flame, our link to the gods themselves, and if you're not doing anything with it, you're ultimately wasting time.

That concept of poesis is also the basis for the word 'poetry', and I have long felt that my greatest talent is in the art and practice of words. I trained as a linguist, writer and political organizer, but over time, much as I love the written and spoken word, I came to realize that it was communication, connecting with people, that was really what made me feel like I was using my gifts to the fullest. I turned my talents to what I felt was the greatest challenge facing humanity currently and that, combined with my natural inclination to share and build consensus rather than think I alone know best, led to the founding of the energy cooperative in 2011.

So here I am, trying hard to do something I really care about, change the world for the better, and make a decent living into the bargain, and hopefully, my story will help you decide to support a worthy cause.
