Shakespeare as Shakespeare intended: under the sun and in front of a loud, standing, possibly distracted audience.

They founded "Shakespeare in the Square" shortly after moving to New York. Unable to find a Shakespeare Company open to non-acting majors at NYU, they decided to start their own. Rose is a sophomore at NYU's Dramatic Writing program. Dan is a sophomore at NYU's Kanbar Institute of Film & Television.

Our Mission Statement:

"Shakespeare in the Square is a student-run organization that offers free performances of Shakespeare's work in and around Washington Square Park. Like “Shakespeare in the Park,” our goal is to bring Shakespeare to the public. Sure, we don’t have Pacino, but our productions will bring classical theater straight to the Village community. Our company provides the only opportunity to watch and perform Shakespeare as Shakespeare intended: under the sun and in front of a loud, standing, possibly distracted audience. Seen in this context, the power of Shakespeare’s language to captivate a crowd will become clear. We hope that our company will alter the way people of all ages and cultures view Shakespeare."

Shakespeare in the Square is open to all NYU students interested in classical theater and performance. We encourage anyone with a passion for Shakespeare to audition for our Fall and Spring productions. Students can also become involved in technical roles, such as costume design and stage-managing, or in developing our outreach program. Shakespeare in the Square also hosts events throughout the academic year, including lectures, staged readings, and workshops.

Shakespeare in the Square's first production, Julius Caesar, was sponsored by Tisch Profunds and was a huge success. For its second production, Twelfth Night, SITS raised $1,086 though IndieGoGo alone. On its third production, Macbeth, they nearly doubled that! Without any official sponsors for its Fall productions (since Profunds can only sponsor one production per year), SITS looks for support each year through and within the IndieGoGo community.
