traveler, tinkerer, solver of problems

I tend to wear several hats simultaneously. I’ve been an academic for close to two decades, and I’m currently a Professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington.

In recent years I’ve gotten very interested in innovation and unofficial expertise, and I run a project called Hackademia.

I’m also a writer, a tinkerer, a builder of giant giraffes, and, now, a co-founder and CEO of Shift Labs, a company working with hackers, makers, and medical professionals to rapidly prototype and manufacture low-cost medical devices for use in low resource environments. Our market is BRIC and beyond, and we are especially focused on serving the needs of both doctors as well as lightly-trained front line health workers. We build robust, creative solutions that will improve the ability of clinicians to deliver quality care.
