About the Festival of Lights

Producer Taos Tandoori brings together internationally acclaimed ensembles Music Meets Bells, from Kolkata, India, and Sangeet Millennium, from Austin, Texas, who team up for the first time ever to present the Festival of Lights in the Land of Enchantment, a four-day “journey of the senses.” You will experience a world-class concert, Indian dance and Indian and Indo-jazz music workshops, Tandoori cuisine, yoga sessions with live Indo-jazz music, and more … all in the visually stunning, artistically inspiring setting of Taos, New Mexico.

Music and dance events will take place at the iconic Old Martina’s Hall, a historic 230-year-old adobe venue much-beloved in Taos. An opening night Tandoori dinner will be served following a lamp-lighting ceremony at the historic La Posada de Taos Bed & Breakfast, just two blocks from the Taos Plaza.

If you cannot travel to the Festival Lights, we will bring it to YOU by providing a live event CD and DVD to contributors of $40 or more.

Who We Are

Like the mix of spices for which it named, Taos Tandoori brings the sights, sounds and tastes of India to Taos. Producer Ana Chávez is a native New Mexican and resident of Taos for 24 years.

Sangeet Millennium, one of the leading world music ensembles in central Texas, presents traditional and new music and dance of the Indian subcontinent through collaborative and interactive performance, workshops, classes, festivals, and films. Founder and Director Amie Maciszewski is a sitarist, music educator, ethnomusicologist, and native of New Mexico. Saxophone player/composer Paul Klemperer is a regular collaborator. Both are based in Austin, TX.

Music Meets Bells is a unique experimental duet between the sensuous, sculpturesque temple dance form Odissi and the 100-stringed Indian hammered dulcimer santoor. It is a musical conversation on stage—jamming together! Music Director Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya is a maestro of the santoor and an internationally acclaimed performer and composer, named as Rotary International’s Global Ambassador for Peace and Goodwill. His wife and professional partner, Odissi dancer and choreographer Guru Sanchita Bhattacharya, hailed by the Edmonton (Canada) Journal as the “ambassador of Odissi dance around the world,” is also recipient of the Shree Kshetra Mahari (revered temple dancer) award from the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Orissa, India, among numerous awards.

How You Can Help

We need your contributions to cover the costs to produce this event, including production costs, and artists’ travel costs and fees. The amount raised from tickets sales along is not sufficient to cover these costs.

What You Get

Each of our nine levels of giving offers a unique package of benefits that you can customize, regardless of whether you plan to attend the Festival or would like to “listen in” or "view in" through live DC and DVD recordings and support the artists’ efforts in other ways. Benefits include discounts at La Posada Bed and Breakfast (during the festival), the chance to help light the lamp and speak at the opening night dinner, free admission to the workshops, VIP seating at the concerts, public acknowledgement, signed live event CD and DVD recordings with your name in the support credits, and more.

Impact

Your contribution will help to make artistic and cultural history by supporting Taos Tandoori's India-inspired event for the third year, firmly establishing taos Tandoori's Festival of Lights as an annual tradition. Together, we will help to light lamps of cross-cultural understanding and artistic delight in Taos, NM, an artistic center that remains somewhat isolated because of its geographic remoteness and socioeconomic challenges.

Other ways to help

Please donate today, and share the link to this page widely through social media and email. The event is a little over a month away, so we appreciate your help in getting the word out!
