Teach Paz
<!--StartFragment--> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Trebuchet MS Italic"">I am a fervent educator devoted to the social and emotional evolution of humanity and the health of Mother Earth.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Propelled by my passion for communication and the Spanish language, I have studied, worked and played in México, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Peru, Spain, Ecuador, Colombia, and Panamá. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>I was first inspired to teach Spanish 11 years ago with the intention of bridging English and Spanish speaking communities in Northern California. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Trebuchet MS Italic'">As a teacher (and a student) I have always felt uncomfortable with the power-over structure of our educational system, using rewards and punishments as motivation for "good behavior" and achievement. I always knew that I wanted to contribute to youth in finding their calling, establish a democratic way of learning together and an environment where everyone felt comfortable to be themselves. Needless-to-say, I have struggled with many factors along the way. </font></p><p class="MsoNormal"><font class="Apple-style-span" face="'Trebuchet MS Italic'">Three years ago, I learned of the practice of</font><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS Italic'; "> <a href="http://www.cnvc.org/Training/NVC-Concepts" title="Non Violent Communication (NVC)" target="_blank">Non Violent Communication (NVC)</a> and my life was changed forever. Of all of the </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS Italic'; ">retreats and workshops</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS Italic'; "> I have since attended, I was most profoundly moved by the 2009 <a href="http://www.playinthewild.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=3&lang=en" title="Play in the Wild! International Youth Intensive" target="_blank">Play in the Wild! International Youth Intensive</a> led by Catherine Cadden, Jesse Wiens and Melanie Whitham. I attended that summer as an intern seeking mentors whose intention was to </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS Italic'; ">truly c</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS Italic'; ">onnect with youth at a heart level. M</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS Italic'; ">y vision for right livelihood, co-creating, learning and growing with youth, was validated and nourished. For me, practicing NVC is about deep healing, being real and cultivating compassion for myself and others. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS Italic'; "> I am hopeful that by learning how to listen deeply to myself, others and the elements, I am contributing to the remaking of society, that it may be a safe and joyful place for all humans to be human. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS Italic'; ">Currently, I am teaching English to Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) in Central Virginia and I will return to Play in the Wild! as a co-leader this summer. After that, I plan to return to California and join forces with other inspired educators whose intention is to connect with what makes them come alive and nurture that same creative expression in youth. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS Italic'; "><span style="mso-spacerun: yes"></span>I am most alive in the presence of youth, dancing, singing, and being in the great outdoors.</span></p> <!--EndFragment-->
