The Trustees of the National Lighthouse Museum plan a fully operational National Lighthouse Museum near the St. George ferry terminal on Staten Island, New York City; and can't do it without your support!

We need $600,000 for the "pilot" museum facility and another $400,000 for first-year operations, we have raised $180,000 so far.

Lighthouse enthusiasts around the United States and Staten Island want to open the National Lighthouse Museum at the former Coast Guard depot near St. George in Staten Island, New York

A decision by New York City's Economic Development Corporation to use one building at the former depot is coming soon. When approved, we will seek grants from organizations such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

We are aiming for a Summer 2013 opening. We plan to take over an adjacent, far-larger building on the 10-acre city site. The larger facility would require a major renovation and an investment of some $15 million.

The National Lighthouse Museum expects to attract some of the two million tourists a year who take the Staten Island Ferry that docks a short distance from the old depot. There are other historic buildings within two miles of the proposed museum, including the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, formerly a home for retired sailors that opened in 1833 and features five Greek Revival buildings, a maritime museum, a children's museum and a theater. The Alice Austen House, home of the famed 19th-century photographer, is nearby.

The harbor and its environs have abundant lighthouses and a long history with the structures. New York merchants fed up with shipwrecks petitioned the British colonial government in 1761 to hold a lottery to build the Sandy Hook, N.J., Lighthouse, which is the oldest continuously operated one in the country.

You can also go to www.lighthousemuseum.org and click on "Donate" at the top right of the page.
