Supporting Midwives World Wide

I am a midwifery advocate and supporter of women's midwifery education.

I was first introduced to midwifery care when a friend was having a homebirth with a midwife. I later worked for Midwifery Today in Eugene, Oregon and learned in depth the benefits of midwifery care, natural childbirth and breastfeeding.

I gave birth to my daughter, Daisy in 2007 with the assistance of a midwife in a small historic two bedroom birthhouse in Old Town Alexandria, VA called Birth Care. It was the most empowering experience of my life. I labored for 17 hours surrounded by love, kindess and the best possible care. I want to bring this experience to all women and help educate women world wide who want to become midwives. I believe midwives and peaceful natural childbirth will help restore peace in the world and reduce infant and maternal mortality world wide. Peace begins with birth.

I am the co-founder of Mother Health International (MHI), a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to respond and provide relief to pregnant women and children in areas of disaster, war and extreme economic poverty. We are committed to reducing maternal and infant mortality rates by creating culturally competent, sustainable and holistic birth centers using the midwifery model of care. We work alongside traditional midwives to create best practices that work towards our goals of access to comprehensive maternal health care, education and the facilitation of positive childbirth experiences. With every healthy birth there is a benefit for the communities that we serve and the world as a whole.

I serve on the boards of Midwife International www.midwifeinternational.org and NIGH-Nightingale Initative for Global Health. http://www.nightingaledeclaration.net/
