Daughter of Amazing Parents

I'm a 28 year old daughter of amazing parents who lived through the Khmer Rouge regime from the 1960s through 1983 when they both came to Canada. To this day, I don't know the full story of their survival. Occasionally, my mother will retell a story of how she had to survive, give tales of the many obstacles she encountered on her way to escape Cambodia, and the things she has seen. When war broke out, she was around 10, throughout the years, her parents and many of her siblings were victims of starvation, hard labour, and the Khmer Rouge soldiers.

Every single time she recounts her experience, I sit in awe realizing the hard struggles she (and my father) went through before arriving in Montreal to finally give birth to me a year later. Not a single day passes by where I don't tell myself how blessed I am to have hard working parents who gave me everything to have the life I have today.

I have always felt like I don't give enough back to my parents even though they make me feel otherwise. This is my time to give them back what they've been missing.
