The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence

My story begins as a kid who grew up on the hardened streets of Flint, Michigan during the height of the crack epidemic in the 1980’s. The baby of eight children, I was exposed to the harsh realities of failing schools, divorce, drugs, violence, and alcoholism that plagued my surroundings and family.

Rising above my circumstances, I went on to attend Howard University where I started my non-profit organization which is now Innercity Outreach. My original mission was to provide support to low income and inner city youth in need of financial assistance for secondary education due to my own struggles to pay for school. Right after college, I helped send over 40 students to college through Innercity Outreach.

I went on to achieve success in real estate development and a burgeoning film career. In 2007, I was awarded Best Docudrama at the New York International Independent Film Festival for his documentary, “Flintown Kids,” which depicted the convoluted labyrinth of everyday street life in Flint--the town labeled, The Worst Place to Live in America by Money Magazine. My heart however led me to leave it all behind and abandon aspirations of becoming a Hollywood film director and return to my roots, empowering youth whose backgrounds mirrored mine.

I then decided that I wanted to provide the support system and the proper foundation for success that many inner city youth lacked – by starting my influence at the 9th grade. Just as the subjects of my film, I struggled to elevate myself above the hardened and dangerous Flint streets and relieve the daily pressures of life in my community. I have achieved much success in my short life and I am committed to reach back into my community and communities around the country to mentor and support inner city youth.

I have a special connection with them...because I am them.

Through Innercity Outreach, and now, The Executive Preparatory Academy of Finance, I am able to fulfill my purpose to provide all students with what I was not afforded, the right --to obtain a world-class education.
