My life’s purpose

To inspire creative people to do the best work of their lives, and in doing so build teams who can create delightful, thrilling and profound audience experiences.

Things I’ve done

Commercials Director - Terraplane (2001 - 2006)
I was fortunate to start work as a professional director at the age of 22. In five years, I directed more than 50 commercials, for clients like MTN, Coca-Cola, Unilever and Nokia. I became known as a director with a strong visual sense, specialising in performance and story-telling. This was an invaluable time of learning and growth for me: I led large teams of top creative professionals, used the most high-end equipment and facilities, and filmed on 3 continents.

Writer/Director - Flickerfilm for “The Fall” (2006)
While acclaimed international director Tarsem Singh was shooting in Cape Town, he saw my short film Requiem for Broken Toys and offered me the opportunity to write and direct a short sequence for his upcoming feature, The Fall. For two weeks, I worked directly with Tarsem on the short script, watched him work on set and even collaborated with some of his international crew, including Oscar-winning costume designer, Aiko Ishioka. The result is the black-and-white “flickerfilm”, which can be seen in the last scene of The Fall, released in 2006.

Director - Mann Made Media (2006 - 2011)
With a desire to work with longer form and a more diverse range of media, I left advertising and joined Mann Made Media, a digital experiential agency specialising in corporate videos and events. Here I was able to originate concepts, write scripts and work “hands on” with greater creative freedom. My largest growth area was learning to achieve results with considerably smaller budgets, a process that proved very rewarding as I began to see greater results with fewer means. During this time, I also expanded my knowledge of computer graphics and animation effects, working extensively with a diverse range of post-production specialists.

Founder - Zero Dollar Film School (2008 - )
As I set out to write and direct my first feature film, I feel it is important that I give something back to young filmmakers around the world. With this in mind, I founded the Zero Dollar Film School in 2008 - an online video blog documenting the lessons learned from first time feature filmmaking. To date, this resource includes four 10-minute videos on script-writing, and will continue to expand to include other disciplines as pre-production begins. The Zero Dollar Film School channel has been well-received by filmmakers and artists around the world, and has been featured in the top twenty most viewed South African channels on YouTube. www.youtube.com/zerodollarfilmschool

Awards & Festival Selections
2000 SAMA MUSIC AWARDS - Nomination - Best music video: TKZEE Tzinjazami
2001 NTVA Avanti GOLD - Animation (Broadcast) TKZEE Tzinjazami - Garreth Fradgley and Tyron Janse van Vuuren
2001 NTVA Avanti GOLD - Animation (Narrowcast) - Requiem for Broken Toys
2001 Aardklop Arts Festival - Special Mention - Requiem for Broken Toys
2001 Ibdaa Media City, Dubai - Finalist - Requiem for Broken Toys
2004 One City Many Cultures, Cape Town - Official Selection - Requiem for Broken Toys
2004 London, Up Over Down Under Film Festival - Official Selection - Requiem for Broken Toys
2010 Loeries Awards - Finalist (Experiential - Digital Applications) - Standard Bank WAP Connections Game - Stephen Buchanan and Tyron Janse van Vuuren
