Picture a little girl walking home from school with her girlfriends. The sound of 10 year old giggles could be heard for blocks. Suddenly, one becomes silent as she sees a small bird on the ground with one wing stretched out to the side. Not far from her house she convinces her friends to stand watch while she runs home to get a box and towel.

She returns in a flash, thanks her friends for standing watch and lovingly places the bird on the towel she had carefully made into a bed inside the box. Her mother complains of diseases the bird may be carrying and tells the bird cannot be in the house. In protest, the little girl builds a home for the bird with shoe boxes and pieces of kindling she gathers from the stockpile on the balcony.

For weeks she tends to this little bird, changing the bedding, providing small containers of water and food she knew her parakeet wouldn't mind sharing. The injured wing healed and was soon tight against the bird's body. In anticipation she sat on the balcony encouraging the bird to fly. Suddenly, the little bird popped out of the house she had built and took flight.

45 years later, she finds a new born sparrow she names Mr. Peepers. Lovingly she nurses the baby bird all night by feeding it with an eyedropper filled with crushed dry dog food and water. The next day she drives 30 miles to the wild bird sanctuary and is filled with joy when told Mr. Peepers will be just fine.

I don't live my life focused on how much stuff I can accumulate or to become popular. If I listened to the good opinion of others I would have accomplished little, if anything, in my life. With a childlike heart I find joy in helping the helpless, exploring new ideas, creating things and loving the wondrous world I live in.

I see what can be more often than what is. The end of my institutional education was merely the beginning of my quest for knowledge and search for the truth. I believe the only way things change is when one person steps forth to make a difference in the life of another. The smallest act of kindness can change someone's day.
