Dana M. Reed grew up in Mississippi and discovered her love for dance at the early age of three.  Dana graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a BFA in Dance Education in 2003. It was there that she developed an interest in community arts and eventually founded two volunteer based dance programs. As artistic director of her dance company, Alternative Collaborations, Dana relocated to New York City. She has since been awarded a performance residency at Chen Dance Center in New York and an artistic residency at the Bali Purnati Center for the Arts in Indonesia.  Dana has also performed with Marisa Gruneberg, Stephan Koplowitz, Allison Vinal, and Jeramy Zimmerman.  However, her true passion lies in teaching dance to others, especially children.  She has taught at various institutions around the world including Nightingale Bamford School, PS 165 and Stagecoach Theater in New York; APAC Magnet School in Mississippi; and Cikal School in Jakarta. Dana also directs the Bates Dance Festival’s Youth Arts Program in Lewiston, ME.  She relocated from New York City to New Orleans in January 2010 to develop and direct Kid’s Play NOLA.   Dana has taught dance at various local locations and formed partnerships with the North Rampart Community Center, Boys and Girls Club YET, Home Schooled Group, and Anne Burr Dance Studio to offer free arts classes.  Dana believes that art has encouraged her to respect herself and others and to have pride in her work. It has also allowed her to create an original artistic voice and the strength to move forward no matter what obstacles she may encounter.  This is why Dana finds instruction in the arts a necessity in all communities.
