Ending Rape Culture, Sexualized Violence, and Victim Blaming Through Awarenes and Action!

The Slutwalk movement originated in Toronto, Canada in response to a police officer’s statement that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized.” After successfully holding a Slutwalk in Toronto, the movement has spread to major cities around the world, now it is Portland, Oregon's time.

On Sunday, July 31, 2011, in downtown Portland, groups from all different ethnic backgrounds, ages, abilities, educations, gender identities, and sexual orientations will take a stand against sexualized violence and victim blaming. SlutWalk Portland rally & march will begin at Terry Schrunk Plaza, at SW Jefferson and 4th Avenue at 1:00 PM.

SlutWalk is a rally and march designed to challenge rape culture, sexualized violence, victim blaming, and to confront the dehumanizing apathy of the legal system and society at large in response to the systematic and global rape epidemic. We also understand that rape, sexualized violence, and assualt is used globally as a tool of war, that homophobia and transphobia are forms of sexualized violence used to police and enforce heteronormative gender and sexual roles, enforce patriarchy through violence, and to perpetuate white supremacy and the marginalization of the bodies, experiences, and sexualities of folks of color.

We are coming together to say, "Enough is enough!" Please join us in supporting and carrying our message that sexual assault is about the perpetrator and their abuse of power and control, never about provocation.

This event will consist of a rally and march kick off with a wide array of guest speakers and community representatives, including: performance artists, sex workers rights advocates, academics, intimate partner violence and sexual assault response advocates, and organizing community partners — will provide personal testimonies with perspective. With representation from a variety of communities and experiences, the Portland SlutWalk is not an event to miss.
