City Boy plays the Country Blues
I was lucky enough to grow up in an urban envoirnment (Bay Area, south of San Francisco) where folk music, Americana and blues were really coming togther. One result of this was The Greatful Dead, and I even had a finger picking lesson with Jerry Garcia himself (for a whole $5, back around 1966..). I learned guitar in an era of listening to Mississippi John Hurt, Mance Lipscomb, Rev. Gary Davis, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee, as well as Dave Van Ronk, Tom Paxton and Tom Rush...not to mention Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, etc... So I played guitar and harp in some folk groups and then formed the first electric acid-folk band in Denver (The Crystal Palace Guard) back in the late '60s. I continued with life, and college, and other bands, and became more involled in jazz, both as a DJ and a player. Years later, I met Marc Malin here in Santa Fe, and he had a similar musical background on the East Coast...when we started playing together, it was like..."Hey, this is the guy I've been looking for!". We started here as Marc and Mike, an acoustic duo, playing tunes from the likes of Tampa Red, Blind Blake and Robert Johnson...then showly stared adding players and more original tunes. We recorded a Live CD, then a short time later our first studi effort "Blues For Too Long", with 9 original tunes...which are very much fun to listen to in our live shows, by the way. Our concept with the "Revue" was to bring in players that could add to our sound, like autoharp, mando, fiddle, stand up base, etc, while keeping the core band intact. Now this new CD will have 10 or more NEW songs, most by Marc, as well as new players....we take on a bit more urban, jazzy, even Deadish sound. The CD will also offer a few surprises. So this is really a culmination of our musical lives and curent songwriting, and I'm glad to be a part of it. You can be a part of this new CD with your help, too, here on Indiegogo!
