Naimah Fuller producer/director of HOME - THE GREAT MIGRATION OF THE 21st CENTURY a documentary about blacks moving south in The New Great Migration

ABOUT THE "HOME" DOCUMENTARY PROJECT

This documentary was five years in the making. I began production in 2006. I was inspired to start the project after I moved from New York to Atlanta, and soon discovered that nearly everyone I met was from the mid-west, the northeast, or the west coast. After a little armchair research, I realized something larger was occurring. African Americans weren't just moving to Atlanta, the real story was that black people were relocating by the droves to cities and towns throughout the south. The question I set out to answer in this documentary, was why: why were African Americans moving en masse, migrating to the south.

In my quest to find the answer to that question I set out via rental cars, to all the landmark cities of the Civil Rights Movement; to Memphis, to Selma, to Mississippi, and back to Atlanta. Back on the road again, to Charlotte, New Orleans, Houston, Gerogetown, S.C., The Georgia Sea Islands, and Winston-Salem, N.C. I soon realized that the answer was in the land itself. No other place in America possessed the sacred ground that exists in the south. Ground that was paid for with the blood, sweat, and tears of a people determined to live a life of freedom and equality. Over and over again, people shared their stories, that moving south felt like coming "home". What began as a curiosity soon became a calling, an ancestral calling to identify their returning descendants.

A FILMMAKER'S CHALLENGES

Being an independent filmmaker comes with its own unique set of challenges, one of which is always the lack of funding. From the outset there was no budget to speak of, except money that came from my salary. Needless to say, independent filmmaking is not for the faint of heart. However, challenges notwithstanding, this project has been a lesson in humility to me. It has given me the opportunity to see, and to document, not just how far African Americans have come in the South, but how far the South itself has come. This is the story about human triumph, about how lives are changed when human beings are able to live in an environment where mutual respect, harmony, and appreciation exists. As I approach the completion of the project, I am determined to keep the Faith, overcome the challenges and bring this message HOME.

I have been humbled by the kindness I have received from total strangers who have opened their hearts and their homes to share their stories with me in this documentary. Now I want to share their stories with you and with the world.

HOW YOU CAN HELP ME BRING IT "HOME"

I want this to be your documentary film project to be just as much your project as it is mine, because it is about how we are coping with living in the 21st century. It is about how we still believe there are opportunities for a better life, if we have the courage and the faith to leave the past behind. I want to bring this message to as many people as possible, but I need your help to bring this baby "home". The more people who participate in this fund raising campaign, the better. So I am asking everyone, especially my Facebook family, to help me reach my goal here on Indiegogo. I need your help to spread the word, to Tweet about our IndieGoGo site, to "Like" us on Facebook, blog about us on your blogs, and whatever else comes to mind. So please email this IndieGoGo link, and let your church members, your support groups and co-workers know about our fund raising campaign. It is going to be awesome to take this project to a next level.

I am also looking for "campaign managers" to help me execute my fund raising plan. In return you will receive a "special thank you" in the film credits. You can contact me directly via email at: theplacecalledhome@gmail.com

HOW THE FUNDS WE RAISE WILL BE USED

Funds obtained from our fundraising campaign will be used to complete the final stages of the project, including g.

Finishing the musical score and licensing songs

Marketing and Promoting the project once it is released.

Obtaining licensing rights to music and archival footage

Developing the official project website

Press Kit

Postcards

Posters

DVD Production

DVD Promotional Give-Aways

Radio Ads

Office Website Development

Completing the final editing. Through this project I have learned the true meaning of the word "commitment", of completing what you have started even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. So without a doubt this project has not only made me a better filmmaker, but more significantly, it has made me a better human being. Put simply, it has taught me the true meaning of FAITH.
