Woman of Steele

Rachel Steele wears many hats, including fedoras, but the one that is most important to her, is that of a feminist filmmaker. To Rachel, feminism isn’t a dirty word or something our mother’s did for us so we don’t have to, but an incredibly sexy word and very innate to her personality. She attributes this to reading Eve Ensler prior to turning 16, taking a Women in Film Class in college at age 18, and her awesome parents who taught her to never be apathetic.

After graduating from the University of Colorado in 2008 with a degree in political geography, she freelanced for the online magazine elephant journal, traveled in India, was certified as a yoga teacher, and worked for the non-profit performing arts festival, Spoleto USA. She got her start in film working on the feature film Monogamy, the narrative debut from the director and producer of the Academy Award nominated Murderball. Monogamy was recently awarded the New York narrative prize at the Tribeca film festival. She has worked as a Set PA and Props PA on various films and as a Camera PA on music videos, including Chromeo’s recent video Night by Night from the award winning French Directors Jeremie Rozan and Martial Schmeltz of Surface To Air. She most recently worked as a creative executive for the new management company Prolific, founded by Stuart Wrede from Cinetic and Israel Wolfson, who produced two films that premiered at this year’s Sundance, Hesher and Sympathy for Delicious, and Beware the Gonzo, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Rachel is shooting her second short film, about sex, vulnerability and modern technology, this spring. Her first short film, the Intern and The Dumpster, a silent black and white physical comedy in the vein of Charile Chaplin with an original piano score is currently being submitted to festivals.

Her editor at Elephant Journal calls Rachel “brilliant and snarky,” and after meeting her at the Tribeca Film Festival, Keith Bearden, the writer/director of Meet Monica Velour starring Kim Cattrall, said how “It’s nice to meet someone cool and sane with bitchin glasses.”

Her blog can be found at http://womanofsteele.tumblr.com/ and her imdb page is http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3627387/.
