We seek to make theater more accessible to individuals with Autism, through three programs within our season. Through our educational department, we lead residencies at schools serving students with Autism, as well as training days for educators and artists seeking to work with that population. Finally, we adapt classic and contemporary work to be “Autism-friendly”. The plays we chose, with this disorder in intriguing, diverse ways; painting Autism in a new light for a new audience.

Through our new works program, we foster emerging works that raise awareness of disability. In our first three years we produced thirty-four full productions and twelve developmental readings and workshops of original plays, many of which were NY and world premieres. Our inaugural production of Brecht’s The Good Woman of Setzuan marked the first Autistic-Friendly Theater Production in the country not geared specifically towards younger children. In that production and in productions since, we have employed various techniques to engage not only a traditional theater audience, but also audience members with Autism and other Sensory Processing Disorders. These include using masks, puppets, live music, “in the round” staging, and interactive performances. In addition, we’ve incorporated PECS (Picture Exchange Communication) symbols, an augmentative communication system created to help non-verbal individuals communicate and recognize language.

This coming season, we will continue to adapt classic work, promoting work by new artists and playwrights. Furthermore, we are in the planning stages of a Devised Theatre piece, which will be created with, and hopefully performed in partnership with, students with Autism. The piece will be constructed and created with contributions from individuals with Autism from our residency program, the artists on our board, and educators/artists who have had experience working with Autism. Inspired by one of our nonverbal students from this years residency who asked us (via his Ipad) “what is there for autistic people to do in theater?” because “I really want to try awesomely working on acting” but “talking is really hard for me. Awesome to awesomely know that actors can act without awesome speech!” We want to explore the importance of language in our lives and what role empathy (a skill that is often greatly diminished in individuals with Autism) plays in theater.
