Music is healing, and I'm a healer. Help the Phoenix of music fly again in my life, so I can continue sharing my healing arts with the world.
Darryl Aiken-Afam started his journey into the music world as a child with drum lessons in grade school, followed by flute and piano in middle and high schools respectively. After high school and a move to NYC from Chicago at age 17, he began to steep himself in gospel, R&B, and world music to add to the Funk and Jazz Fusion he was learning in earlier years. During his NYC years he played in many bands and projects and also served as a musical director at times. He has had both formal and informal music training over the years. Some of his more well know teachers have been Mino Cinelu, a world famous percussionist and performer who used to be in Miles Davis' band, and jazz piano great Greg Murphy, who was the pianist for the Rashid Ali Group. Rashid Ali was once the drummer in John Coltrane's band. Darryl has had many great musical adventures over the years but his greatest musical moment was when he played as a backup keyboardist for the seminal funk group Cameo while they were on tour. He got this opportunity through his good friend and teacher Minister Greg Mitchell who was one of the main tour keyboardist for the band at the time. He grew up as a teenager being a big fan of the group and actually ending up playing on stage with them was a dream come true! He is currently a Holistic Fitness Artist in NYC and Chicago teaching fitness, martial arts, yoga, and various types of personal training. And he has created his own system of healing movement/yoga called Meridian Touch. He has successfully used this system to train and heal collegiate and Olympic athletes and even trained Michelle Obama's big brother, Coach Craig Robinson, men's head Basketball Coach at Oregon State University.<br>
