We need more "Soil Refineries!"
After over ten years of backyard vermiculture (worm farming), I learned about biochar (horticultural charcoal) and the story of Terra Preta del Indios. An advanced civilization on the banks of the Amazon River produced deep topsoil in the shallow soil of the rain forest by adding charcoal and household organic wastes. We have duplicated this organic soil restoration process and putting as little as one cup of BioPreta in the hands of indoor gardeners this spring will allow them to personally witness the remarkable results that can be achieved. The International Biochar Initiative states that we need to bury 7 billion tons of biochar every year until 2050 to regain the carbon dioxide levels we enjoyed in 2004. When growers see the positive results of adding only one cup of BioPreta to a cubic foot of potting mix, they will be eager to join in this fight to reduce global climate change while growing superior organic plants. Worms increase the microorganisms in compost many times. These microorganisms attach to the microscopic pores of the carbon which remains in the soil for thousands of years.
