<div style="text-align: justify;">Abu Bakr Shawky is an Egyptian-Austrian filmmaker. He works as a director, writer and editor, living between Cairo and New York. Abu Bakr graduated in 2009 from the High Institute of Cinema in Cairo with a BA in Film Directing, and from the American University of Cairo with a BA in Political Science. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Filmmaking at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.<br></div><div> <p class="p2" style="text-align: justify;"><br></p><p class="p2" style="text-align: justify;">In 2008, he directed “The Colony”, a documentary about the struggle in Egypt’s last Leper Colony and the Lepers’ fight for acceptance. The film went on to win numerous awards at festivals in Egypt, the United States, Europe and Japan. It was also an official selection at Palm Springs International ShortFest, one of America’s biggest short film festivals. <br><span class="s1"></span></p> <p class="p2" style="text-align: justify;"><span class="s1"></span><br></p> <p class="p3" style="text-align: justify;"><span class="s1">In 2009 he shot a documentary in Tokyo about Japan’s clash of generations titled “Chu-gi”, in cooperation with the Japan Foundation. </span></p> <p class="p2" style="text-align: justify;"><span class="s1"></span><br></p> <p class="p3" style="text-align: justify;"><span class="s1">In 2010, he directed “The Road to Atalia”, a 20-minute short film about poverty in rural Egypt resulting in illegal immigration to Italy. The film was produced by Zad Communications and the International Organization for Migration.</span></p> <p class="p2" style="text-align: justify;"><span class="s1"></span><br></p> <p class="p3" style="text-align: justify;"><span class="s1">“Martyr Friday” is his latest documentary, in which he followed the events in Tahrir Square during the Egyptian Revolution in 2011. The film won Best Film Promoting Human Rights at the American International Film Festival, and has been an official selection at Palm Springs, Raindance and Angelus Film Festival. Most recently, it was screened around 250 cities worldwide through Manhattan Shorts Festival. He is also a guest speaker at political events, such as the European Forum Alpbach and the UN Day at University of Pennsylvania.</span></p></div>
