Co-director of OrcaLab, President Pacific Orca Society
I began studying orcas in 1967, initially in captivity, then in the wild. My insights led to involvement in Greenpeace campaigns against commercial whaling in the 1970s. Following the 1982 moratorium decision of the International Whaling Commission, I worked to develop OrcaLab as a research facility where studies would not interfere with the lives of orcas in the wild. I am joined in all aspects of my work by my wife and co-director Helena Symonds. We hope to encourage people to care for whales.
