EVERYTHING THAT IS THE CASE FOR TWO YOUNG WOMEN ON THE EVE OF THE GREAT WAR AMONG OTHER ELEGRANT LIES

written and directed by Frank Boudreaux

featuring Winslow Corbett and Megan Gaffney

England 1914. Eurasia is on the brink of “The Great War,” but no one suspects just how bad it might get yet.

Maddie is a rebel from the British aristocracy; Lena is a Russian émigré depressed by her engineering fellowship at Oxford. Impossibly smart and informed, the girls are saved from suicide by finding each other while waiting on philosophy books held in the “Men Only” Bodleian Library of Oxford. They reveal to each other their independently conceived secret plots to (literally?) explode tradition, and with this revelation, they abandon the educational world of men, founding their own school, “The Oxbridge Forest Gynasium School for Brilliant Young Women,” in a clearing in a forest.

Desperate to solve all of philosophy’s problems (as a solution to the horror that is about to come?), they act as some kind of outlaw protégés to their contemporary philosophical radicals, Bertrand Russell and the polarizing Ludwig Wittgenstein. Lena and Maddie channel all of the cultural, artistic, philosophical, and political tumult of the era into self-designed experiments to test the limits of human experience – enacting “Drills” around an obstacle course of logs they set up and rearrange to their purposes.

…Other Elegant Lies is an entertaining, immediate theatrical landscape for all its historical references and its highest of stakes. The experiments are highly-choreographed vaudevilles; the settings straddle the line of reality and expression. The language is unbalanced and fun – heightened? grounded? historical? vernacular?

Lena and Maddie believe that their unique perspective as girls in a world of men can add something essential to overcoming the pitfalls of the human condition. It is a painfully funny and absurd journey to realize just what their contributions can be… and what its limits are.
