I would spend my summers working on farms tending cows and harvesting apples, peaches and grapes. I went to a small State College for two years and then decided I heed the call of President John F. Kennedy and joined the Peace Corps. I was stationed in the Rampur district of India from 1966 to 1968, working in community development, primarily introducing new rice, wheat and potato varieties to local farmers. </span><!--EndFragment--> <br></span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><br></span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">I spent a short while in Detroit,Michigan after returning to the USA. I moved to the mountains of North Carolina and Celo, a land trust of 1200 acres in the Toe Valley. I became interested in energy conservation and solar design and formed a construction company, Sunspace Homes, emphasizing conservation,passive solar and custom design. We have built a number of high quality homes over 35 years.</span></p> <p class="p1"><span class="s1">My wife Becky Gray, has established a career as a regionally known ceramic artist, our daughter, Katelin is working on a Masters program in International Business at Georgetown University in Washington,DC, and our son, Ian, is the seasonal naturalist at Mountain Air Community, Burnsville,NC after just finishing his undergraduate work.</span></p> <p class="p2"><span class="s1"><b>Conservative communities</b></span></p> <p class="p1"><span class="s1">I became interested in conservative communities from my exposure to Gandhian Economics. In Celo I discovered the careful use of resources and pursued this line of thought further.</span></p> <p class="p3"><span class="s1"><b>Earthwatch</b></span></p> <p class="p4"><span class="s1">In the early 80’s I was fortunate to participate in and lead some expeditions to study the ancient Roman underground city of Bulla Regia and the Berber villages in Tunisia. Also, I studied the south facing underground villages of the Loire Valley, France shortly after. And I’ve maintained my interest in environmental design and resource conservative cultures since.</span></p>
