I'm Tamara Wellons, a singer and songwriter, and teaching artist working on the release of Songs for Janie, a concept album based on the literature of Zora Neale Hurston. "Their Eyes Were Watching God" was one of those books I was quite enthralled with every detail. I honestly did not expect it to be a love story, which I am quite a sucker for. I claim parts of this story as my own. Its relatedness to many women is the reason why I think its important to tell in song.
This project started when I went to Risikat Okedeyi, the concept creator, and asked her to come up with a creative direction to take the music i had already been working on. It was May 2009 when the idea was birthed and here we are now 80% done with the recording. Lots of "life" happened between then and now personally.

And in perfect timing, Brooke Kid from Joe's Movement agreed to present the musical concert production at Joe's Movement Emporium in Mt. Rainier, MD, where I grew as a teaching artist, instructing camps and classes for the children in that neighborhood.

In my music career, I started my own company Kollibri Music and have released an album, an EP, several house/dance music singles with legendary producers, featured on Thievery Corporation's album, "Culture of Fear," and performed at venues such as, Jazz Cafe in London.
